Dry’s Arsenal
(Deck Garage)
Sept. 26, 2006

Hello Everyone,

To start things off in my new deck garage (Dry’s Arsenal), I’ve decided to update one of my classic casual decks, in an attempt to make it competitive.  This is an old Hydro Hurricane deck that received different updates as new sets came out.  I guess it’s evident that I’ve neglected it so let’s take a look and see how it can improve.

For those of you who are not familiar with Hydro Hurricane decks, they can be simply described as decks that swarm light and darkness creatures for the purposes of bouncing cards.  However instead of building a mainstream Hydro Hurricane deck, I originally decided to stick with only light and water.  Darkness is fun but when you solely concentrate on light and keep bouncing your opponent’s mana, then you essentially shut them down.  Here’s my neglected Hydro Hurricane deck.

Name:  Dry Hurricane Lock

Light

3x Phal Ega, Dawn Guardian

4x Vess, the Oracle

4x Pala Olesis, Morning Guardian

4x Ferrosaturn, Spectral Knight

2x Holy Awe

2x Diamond Cutter

Water

4x Corile

3x Shtra

3x Unicorn Fish

4x Hydro Hurricane

4x Eureka Charger

3x Shock Hurricane

Total:  40 Cards

Creatures:  25

Spells:  15

This deck used to win a lot of casual matches for me but after some time and with the release of a few new sets, it’s lost some of its luster.  I’ve tried to patch it with cards from newer sets every now and then but it hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves.

On the first 3 turns with this deck I begin by summoning the weenie light blockers.  It’s an excellent way to counter a rush deck and it is key in setting up the finishing combo.  On turn four I then get to use Eureka Charger and I draw a card.  Then on turn 5 I immediately cast Hydro Hurricane.  At this point in time I make my opponent scoop 2 to 3 mana and it looks like the combo is over… no big deal.  Right?  Now that the opponent is somewhat slowed down, I summon Phal Ega and a 1 mana blocker and I pick up Hydro Hurricane, using Phal Ega’s effect.  Next turn I make my opponent scoop 3-5 mana.  Now he’s crippled.  The game is pretty much set after that (in a perfect world).  I can just cast Diamond Cutter or if I need to clear any creatures out I can use Shock Hurricane and scoop up my 1 mana blockers.  Let’s see how we can fix it…

Recommendations:

The first thing that stands out is the fact that the color balance is off.  There are 19 light cards and 21 water cards.  This definitely has to change.  As I see it, the Shtras are very ineffective in this deck.  Yes, it makes the opponent pick up an additional mana but they will only slow the deck down in the beginning.  This creates an opening for more light weenies.

-3x Shtra

+3x La Ura Giga, Sky Guardian

Holy Awe is also a great card but it doesn’t belong in this deck.  It’s too slow and with so many blockers the deck has enough stall.  Let’s speed up the deck and add to the light creature pool by adding Magris, Vizier of Magnetism.  Come to think of it, in a deck like this Magris surpasses Eureka Charger because it adds a light creature in the battle zone.  Eureka is still good but 4 copies might be overdoing it

-2x Holy Awe

-1x Eureka Charger

+3x Magris, Vizier of Magnetism

Corile is also not the best choice because the whole point of the deck is to return cards back to the opponent’s hand.  There really is no point to Corile’s effect when the opponent is holding 10 cards.  We’ll replace Corile with his alter ego.

-4x Corile

+4x Aqua Surfer

Unicorn Fish does seem helpful in this deck.  We’ll keep it as optional.  For now let’s try switching it for another shield trigger creature named Aqua Skydiver.  This will also add another available light creature.

-3x Unicorn Fish

+3x Aqua Skydiver

Here’s the final deck after the recommendations:
