In Depth-Finding a Deck that Works for YOU!

Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2005 14:59:28 -0500 (CDT)

Hey again all Pojo-goers! Welcome to my second article to date?In Depth-Finding a deck that works for you. Throughout this article, you will travel to some of my past deck experiences and some of the stuff you should try while finding a deck. As most of you already know, I am a deck fixer, so this should mean I know a lot about decks..right? Well, this wasn?t always the case, and I know what lead to my success, and what mistakes people make.

You're Running a New Deck AGAIN?

This is the number 1 problem I see with people currently in my meta. If they find a deck that does only OK, they immediately change it and run something different the next week. I have a major problem with that and actually believe that if you stick with a deck you can win often. The top 2 players in my state (Me and my rival Josh Richards), we run the same decks almost every week.

I currently just changed from my black/blue deck that I was running for awhile. My deck usually lasts me about 3 months, then it?s time for a change. I recently changed to a 4 color control (4cc) deck. The first week I used it in the tournament, it didn?t do great. I went 3-4 with it in the tournament. But I knew the deck had potential. So, I asked for help. Yes, I asked for help with my deck.

I went back the next week, the deck ran amazingly better, only losing to Josh Richards all day (8-3) which landed me in second place. Just because I lost, I didn?t dismantle the deck. I liked the deck and knew it had potential, if more people take this into consideration, I know there will be killer decks everywhere. Every deck has flaws, and once you get home, think about how your deck ran that day, and what you could do to make it better.

Always remember, when you get bored with a deck, it?s time for a change. One of the most important aspects, find a deck you like. If you like a deck, you will do good with it. Every player doesn?t like to run cookies, some like old school decks, or decks that haven?t been used yet. But don?t get me wrong, there?s nothing wrong with trying something new. I probably build a new deck every week, but it doesn?t become my main deck. I use it as a spare and play with it before the tournament and see what people think.

?Da Cookies?

In this section, I?ll be discussing some of the big decks that are known as cookies, aka cookie cutter.

U/B/X

Black, Blue, anything is big at the moment, there has been a bit of a drop in u/b/r, but it?s still pretty big

?Da Cryptic?

A deck relying on this card has been very good and has proven to do good at invitationals around the U.S., I?m no different, I play this in my 4cc.

?Crazy Val?

This deck has been fading a bit also, I?m not seeing much of Val as I used to, but again, still big

4 Color Control

This is probably the biggest deck out right now, with tons of people running this type of deck, it might actually become the new cookies. It?s just not there yet, and I think it will take people some time to switch over from thinking U/B/R is no longer the cookies.

A Look into the Future-October

I still don?t know what to expect at the Continentals, only time will tell. I?m sure we will see all of the decks mentioned above plus all the variations of dragons there are. But, again, these are only guesses so, you just gotta go to LA (where you can meet me :-P) and see what happens.

Until next time,
