The Basics

We're going to look at another card that appears to be "meh" at best with a gimmick, but actually puts out when it comes to the playing field. Aqua Spy's a fairly reasonable body cost, but his Metamorph ability is where he really shines. I don't personally summon my Spies early in the game unless I need a high-power evolution creature. For this purpose, there are definitely better alternatives alone, but being a part of one of the longest-supported evolution creatures of all time definitely has it's advantages. So while being able to give some shield swings early game and evolve, he's also got the late-game advantage which is what I think really makes him powerful.

How This Affects The Game

The formats you can use this guy in are a lot more luck-based than the TCG, so shields play even more of an important factor in determining the outcome of a match. With the smaller deck size it's incredibly difficult to get the right cards for the right situations, and you don't want to lend your opponent one that you might not be able to get your counter against.

The most obvious instrument of Spy's effect is to follow through with removing the shields. Fire is especially good for this, but Nature and Darkness also have some interesting ways to remove such problems. Spy can also team up with Aqua Patrol, changing their shields if you didn't like what you saw. The new accurate evolution swing involving late-game summons of Spy and evolving to Jouster allows for repeated shield checking and a creature that won't give up on breaking them.

How This Affects You

Look at the colors in your deck.

Do you have blue?

If yes, Aqua Spy!

If you don't, can you fit in blue and how badly do you need to avoid shield triggers.

If it's a big deal for you, Aqua Spy!

If not, then make sure you have some good shield-making/trading cards to get around your opponent's newfound vision. Emeral, Mana Nexus, and even Sundrop Armor if you really get desperate are all options.

This guy is a lot more awesome than first impression. Check him out!
