Top Guns: An Analysis of the Highest Frequency Played Cards in the 2013 KMC Post-Clash of the Duel Masters Metagame
July 15, 2013
By JMatthew

The last of the KMCs are over and 48 players (along with a handful of LCQ hopefuls) are looking to what they will play during “Champs Weekend” coming up in less than three weeks! Will the deck they ran for the KMC they qualified in withstand a gauntlet of other KMC qualifiers or should these players be looking a little more closely at what their fellow qualifiers ran and perhaps modify their deck choice strategy accordingly?

Now, in my own real world occupation data is key. “Expert opinion” is a start, but without data you don’t have a leg to stand on. Because of this mindset I believe real, concrete data is important in other areas of my life, including in the world of Kaijudo. Frankly, the majority of Kaijudo information you see out there either in print or  in video form are based on opinion and conjecture. With Kaijudo now officially being a year old, I believe if this game is going to be taken seriously as it steps into the next level of competition, then we need to take the our competitive information seriously. With that, actual, raw, concrete data is necessary.

I have gathered data regarding all of the top 8 ranking decks from the KMCs which were held after the release of Clash of the Duel Masters. From this information I have extrapolated two list of “top 20” cards. The first list is categorized by highest frequency cards played by individual number and the second by highest frequency cards by the number of decks they were used in. Additionally, I have included a few observations/conclusions of my own. Take them as you like.

With the exception of the three new cards released in the Elite deck, the available tools for the Champs Weekend metagame should be identical to the current metagame.

Observations of Data

·         Lyra the Blazing Sun is on the top of both list

·         In the top 10 of both list, the only creatures are Light civilization creatures: Andromeda the Citadel, Lyra the Blazing Sun and Keeper of Laws

·         Skull Shatter would likely be higher on the list, however some of its thunder has been fragmented by the introduction of Squillace Scourger

·         Not surprising to see Terror Pit, Root Trap, Stormspark Blast and Bone Blades highly played.

·         Piercing Judgment has likely worked its way to be a consistently played trigger – a new metagame staple (Terror Pit, Root Trap, etc…).

·         Cyberlord Corile is seeing heavy play in the Northeastern KMCs accounting for its appearance at 18th and 20th on both charts.

·         While Bottle of Wishes is represented on both list, for a shield trigger spell, I believe it is rather poorly represented (based upon all the uproar and arguing over the card).

·         King Tritonus is currently played over 50% more often than Infernus the Immolator

·         Dark Return is the most played “one of” currently in the game with 27 decks running the spell and 25 of those choosing to only run it as a singleton.

·         Hydrobot Crab made a single appearance…in a single deck.

·         Issyl of the Frozen Waste is the least played of the original “Big 5 Dragons” introduced in Dragonstrike Infernus with only a single deck running a single Issyl of the Frozen Waste making top 8.

·         For blocker selection, Star Lantern (12 copies/5 decks), Jade Monitor (0 copies/0 decks) and Keeper of the Clouds (4 copies/3 decks) have fallen greatly out of favor while Scaradorable for Gloom Hollow is still high run (64 copies/30 decks). Fresh meat to the field in the form of the two cost Aqua Strider seems to have taken place of the former (85 copies/33 decks).

·         Logos Scan strongly tops the choice for raw draw power (90 copies/35 decks).

·         Twelve players chose to run Suffocate, however in all but one case this card was run as a singleton.

Below are listed the top 20 cards in two categories. The first, by highest frequency cards played by individual number and the second highest frequency cards by the number of decks they were used in.
