Hello everyone! Today marks my
50th Card of the Day review since we started back in
January! I know I'm pretty pumped about that and I
look forward to bringing you all another fifty and
then some in the future! Today's card is one of the
new Super Rares of DragonStrike Infernus that may
make you reconsider playing all of those cards that
discard from your opponent's hand; I bring you,
Dracothane of the Abyss!
Name: Dracothane of the Abyss
Civilization: Darkness
Type:
Creature
Race: Terror Dragon
Level: 9
Power: 12000
Flavor Text:
In Dracothane's lair, dreams become nightmares.
Rarity:
Super Rare
Set Number:
S3/S5 I 6DSI
Abilities:
Triple
Breaker (This creature breaks 3 shields.)
Dominate the
Dead- When this creature enters the battle zone,
choose up to 2 non-evolution creatures in your
discard pile that are level 4 or less. Put them into
the battle zone.
The dragons coming out of this
set have an insane amount of power and Dracothane in
no exception! 12000 power at Level 9 is becoming
what appears to be a relatively common thing, at
least for the new dragons; hopefully we're not
seeing a big power creep coming up this soon in the
game!
Dracothane is a difficult
creature to remove from the battle zone unless of
course you have Terror Pit/Root Trap/Death Smoke.
When he does get to attack, you had better have a
blocker ready or you're going to lose over half of
your shields (unless you're running Cobalt or some
form of shield regeneration.dek)!
Let's not forget that when this
guy hits the battle zone, he's bringing sexy back
from your discard pile in the form of (up to) two
creatures! So basically, this guy has two Return
From Beyond attached to him (which would cost 8 mana
to play; this guy costs 9... seems pretty good!).
There are some combo cards that can be used to
better utilize his ability such as: Bonerattle
Dragon and Gloom Tomb. I also suspect that Shadow
Champions and Chimeras that die after battle could
use this guy rather effectively too.
Originally I was thinking that
the Darkness Dragon would have something to do with
discarding, breaking shields, or destroying your
opponents creatures but I guess bringing creatures
back from the dead seems more appropriate. Things
can get pretty crazy if you combo this guy with
cards like: Fumes, Rusalka, or possible evolution
bait like Screeching Scaradorable.
Overall, this guy is pretty
good; he's definitely not the best of the Super Rare
Dragons from this set, but well worth looking into.
Expect to see "Dredge" type decks (decks that send
their own creatures/cards to the discard pile so
that they can utilize them later) in the future.
After the release of this set you might just think
twice before playing that Skull Shatter in hand...
Ratings:
Constructed: 3.75/5.00 (You have to base a deck around Dracothane if
you really want to get the most out of him.
Otherwise, there doesn't seem to be much of a point
in striving to get a nine cost dragon out just to
bring back two low level creatures. Triple Breaker
and 12000 power make this guy a huge threat and a
giant target for your opponent.)
Limited: 4.00/5.00 (In limited play, the guy with the biggest dragon
wins. You may be slow to get this guy out but once
you do, there aren't many cards that can take him
down... unless of course your opponent is also
running dragons and happens to have umbra!)
Make sure to stop back tomorrow
when we take our final glance at the land of the
frozen wastes as we are heading into the spring
season! Until next time my fellow Kaijudo Duel
Masters, keep calm and game on!
