Back to classic anime throwbacks, this time we’re going back to school with Duel Academy.

Duel Academy is a Field Spell that applies certain effects based off the Types of monsters on the field. If there is a Warrior, Beast, or Pyro monster on the field, then once a turn if you activate a Trap (except during the Damage Step), you can target and destroy a card the opponent controls. If there is a Dinosaur, Sea Serpent, or Thunder monster on the field, then once a turn if you activate a Spell (again, except during the Damage Step), you can inflict 1000 damage to the opponent. Finally, if there is a Machine, Fairy, or Fiend on the field, then each time you activate a monster effect (once again, except during the Damage Step), you can target a monster you control to have it gain 1000 ATK (even if this card leaves the field). I mean, it’s easy to see what they’re going for here. For practical use, the first effect is probably best for something like Volcanics since they love running Pyro monsters and a bunch of Traps to back them up. I can’t think of many Warrior or Beast Decks that are Trap heavy, except for when Tri-Brigade uses Tri-Brigade Revolt and might have a Beast on the field. The second effect isn’t really worth needing monsters of specific types as well as having to specifically activate a Spell, same goes for the last effect and having to activate a monster effect, since while it is easier to do, the ATK boost isn’t worth it. So honestly, the one practical use for this card I wouldn’t really call that great since Volcanics can do fine without this. It’s a neat card for the artwork, but that’s about it.

Advanced Rating: 1.5/5

Art: 5/5 Yeah, so this is of course Duel Academy/Duel Academia from GX. The effects, however, do have more of a significance than being random Types and effects thrown together. The first effect needing Traps references the Slifer Red Dorm with Jaden (Warriors/Elemental HEROs) and Chazz (Beast/Ojamas) with Pyro and the first effect going with Uria needing Traps to summon, being a Pyro itself, and it destroying cards. The second effect is the Ra Yellow Dorm with Hassleberry (Dinosaurs… yeah Dinosaurs), Bastion (Sea Serpent/Water Dragon) and of course the same for the first effect and Uria, just this time it’s Thunder, Spells, and burn cause of Hamon. Finally we get the last effect based on the Obelisk Blue dorm with Zane (Machines/Cyber Dragons), Alexis (Fairies/Cyber Angels) and then everything else goes to Raviel.
