Chen Wan Lee Buzzkill Clown
Oddly enough, this week seems to be a reflection of my first pieces in each set; my first Base Set piece was the Book of Nothing (Tuesday’s review), and today’s Chrysotic Plague rare was my first CP rare. All it was lacking was a Fleshworm Broodsire review, and the list of my “firsts” would be completed =P

Fine, that said, today’s piece is a Madness piece, and we all know what that means. You either get a creature with poor stats for its cost or good stats for its cost, but with a significant drawback. Today’s piece fits the latter category. So, it’s a 7M for a 5 5/10. Not bad isn’t it! Oh but wait; Multiblade Wound Self 5. So, roll one blade and you’ve just disrupted yourself, roll two and you’ve just killed yourself! Fantastic.

You’d think you can use this, but you just need a place to channel your blades, something like….oh, I don’t know….. a Book of Nothing? But think again – 7M also gives you Ouroboros. Now, Ouroboros is not often used since its effect is very often a drawback. However, it CAN be an advantage. For example, you can use it to save your Doomball(s). You could also use it to banish a vulnerable ally, denying your opponent of conquest points he would have gotten from killing it. Situational, but at least theres a positive side to it, unlike Wound Self.

But, wait, there’s more! Ouroboros has BETTER STATS THAN THE CLOWN. 2 extra points of life, to be exact. So, seeing that the clown is a big flop even in Madness, there isn’t much of a reason to compare it to other aspects, is there? Well, just for fun, I would like to mention that Carrion Spiker has the same cost as the clown. Sure, it is a later drop, but it also has 2 extra defense, potentially 15 attack (17 once Anvilborn comes out due to Omen Locusts), and doesn’t kill itself.

What does this leave us with?

Constructed: 1/5. Don’t. Use. It. Unless you like clowns. With chainsaws.

Limited: 3/5. Oh surprise surprise. This piece is actually playable in limited, because as far as its stats go, its actually good for its cost. If you have a place to throw your blades into that’s great. If not, its still 5 attack for 7M.

Art: 4/5. I have nothing against clowns, so in all fairness, I think the sculpt looks suitably disturbing for those who fear clowns.
