When this card is Normal Summoned: You can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower Insect monster from your hand. You can banish 1 Level 4 or lower Insect monster from your hand, GY, or face-up field, then target 1 face-up monster you control; increase its Level by the Level of the banished monster, until the end of this turn. You can only use each effect of “Dragonbite” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Starting this week with an Insect called Dragonbite…should’ve been a dragon?

Level 4 Tuner, Insect as previously mentioned. A Marauding Captain for Insects, Dragonbite is an instant Synchro, Xyz, or Link 2 Summon on its own. Level 4 or lower Insect monsters only for Dragonbite summoning, it keeps Dragonbite from being used in any deck that would want an extender. 

Banish an Insect to increase another Insect’s level by that amount. Level 4 and lower for banishing helps raise lower Insect monsters while keeping Dragonbite’s effect in check from getting to high level Synchro and Xyz monsters easily. As is Dragonbite can become a Level 8 with its own effect and the reach Dragonbite has with its banish effect makes it very easy to use both in the same turn. The level change can help make those smaller Insects line up with bigger Insects for high rank Xyz.

Dragonbite is great support for less supported Insect archetypes like Digital Bug, Battlewasp, Krawler, Naturia, or the best ever Insect archetype: Inzektor. The banish effect of Dragonbite would work really well with how much Inzektor equip and detach in their archetype.

Good generic Insect support in 2022 wasn’t on my Yu-Gi-Oh bingo card for the year, but it’s cool to see support (good support) for non-mera archetypes and Types.

Now time to dive deeper into Battle of Chaos with what it has to offer outside Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes stuff with the more generic cards this week, starting with Dragonbite.

Dragonbite is a Level 4 DARK Insect Tuner with 1000 ATK and DEF. Stats aren’t great, but Insect got a nice boost recently and DARK is always a plus. Weird the card called “Dragonbite” isn’t a Dragon, but add that to the list of Dragons that aren’t Dragons in this game alone. Anyways, when Normal Summoned you get to Special Summon a Level 4 or lower Insect from your hand, immediately letting you get a nice extender out for a Synchro, Xyz, or Link Summon in an Insect strategy. Most Insect Decks lack good Tuners, so this fills a void to get you some Synchros finally, though I don’t think there’s many good Insect Synchros. Nonetheless, second effect lets you banish a Level 4 or lower Insect from your hand, graveyard, or face-up field to target a face-up monster you control and increase its Level by the Level of the banished monster until the end of the turn. Nice Level modulation effect to help make more specific Synchros with this that you couldn’t normally access, also helps this triggers the banishing effect of Resonance Insect. Each effect is a hard once per turn, which is standard. Dragonbite was kind of a surprise to see considering how lackluster some of the TCG Exclusives outside of the archetypes we get, and sometimes even those archetypes themselves, can be lackluster. Chalk this one up to one of the better modern TCG Exclusives.

Greetings friends!  Do you wish to look as happy as me?  

I’m sorry, that’s a different project I’m working on, but after a brief break, I’m back.  Dragonbite kicks things off this week.  Dark/Insect is fine, Level 4 Tuner, also good things, with a substandard 1000 atk/def.  Free Special Summon of a Level 4 or lower Insect off this card is good…that being attached to a NORMAL Summon; not so good.  There’s going to be times that likely doesn’t matter, as you are going to Normal Summon most of the time regardless.  Effects off the Normal Summon of a Monster are more common all the time.  Level Manipulation comes into play for the second Effect, where removing a Level 4 or lower Insect from your Hand, Grave, or Field (face-up) lets you Target a face-up Monster (any Monster, not even an Insect) to increase its Level by the Level of the Monster you removed.  

Lesse…remove a Level 4 and Target this card, and then you have a Level 8 Tuner on the Field.  That’s a fun play right there.  If you didn’t have to remove an Insect for this Effect, that would likely see play in other Decks.  I’m kinda torn on this card.  Insects don’t remove as much as some Decks, but they certainly can (and cards have and do so, Doom Dozer comes to mind).  It’s certainly an extender card, which isn’t bad, and you’re only keeping it on the Field the Turn it comes out anyway for an Extra Deck play probably 11 out of 10 times.

Art:  4.5/5  (It is one creepy looking…thing…a leech perhaps)  But the art on the background here is beyond gorgeous, and the color contrast is amazing here.

Hope the Easter Bunny didn’t leave too many jelly beans on your lawns yesterday! This week covers some more one-off cards, this time from Battle of Chaos, starting with Dragonbite. It’s a relatively unique combo of being a level 4 DARK insect tuner (if only it were an actual dragon type monster for Rokket synergy, but I get it). 1000 attack and defense is a poor stat spread for a level 4 monster, but it checks out for a tuner.

Both of Dragonbite’s effects are a hard once per turn, which is fair considering that, as in insect, it meshes very well with powerful insect support. After being normal summoned, you can special summon any level 4 or lower insect from your hand, which will almost always lead to a synchro summon or a link 2 (hi, Crystron Halqifibrax!). While being limited to the normal summon stings, Beetrooper Armor Horn fortunately exists, so triggering this on command isn’t so difficult. Dragonbite’s second effect allows you to banish a level 4 or lower insect from your hand, graveyard, or face-up on the field to increase the level of one of your monsters by that insect’s level. While level modulation usually isn’t too useful outside of specific combos, being able to banish insects on demand is incredibly good if only for one reason: to banish Resonance Insect, a nasty non-once per turn combo piece in insect decks. While Dragonbite isn’t what I’d call a staple card, considering it can’t really jumpstart combos on its own, it is a situational extender for just about any insect deck.

Art: 3/5 This guy’s pretty weird, it reminds me of early hodgepodge monsters from back in the day (which makes sense, since this is apparently a dragon-bug thing).

Today we’re looking at generic insect support in the form of the TCG-exclusive Dragonbite. Despite having “dragon” in its name, it is a bug. I guess maybe they were going for a dragonfly…but that doesn’t really reflect in its design. Either way, it’s really cool.

This guy is a Marauding Captain for Insects, allowing you bring out a Level 4 or lower bug from your Hand when Dragonbite is Normal Summoned. These days, having an effect like this locked to a Normal Summon only (and not including Special Summon) is a bit of a bummer, but overall it’s not that bad. I personally think this is balanced. I mean, the only time a Normal Summon effect can feel clunky is when you have multiple sources in your Hand – which can come up in the Battlewasp variant. Beetroopers don’t suffer from this as much since all their effects trigger off ANY summon, so they’re more free to use their NS on the Dragonbite instead of one of their own. Not only that, but Armor Horn grants the user an additional Normal Summon of a Bug, so that helps out a bit.

Dragonbite is a great extender for any bug deck since he’s an instant level 8 or lower Synchro, Rank 4 XYZ, or Link 2. Technically, there’s even LESS restriction here since Dragonbite comes with an additional effect. By banishing a bug from the Grave, Dragonbite can increase the level of another Insect on Field by an amount equal to the banished monster’ This level modulation allows for some sneaky Extra Deck plays. Not only that, but if you recall, most modern insect decks run triple Resonance Insect (and for good reason). This little guy has a nice effect that triggers off being Banished and isn’t limited to once per turn. So, at the very least, Dragonbite can help facilitate a Resonance play.
The only real problem here is the lack of good generic Insect Synchros. I could be wrong, but I believe that Insect is the least used type for Synchro Monsters. There’s like Underground Arachnid…and the handful of Battlewasp Synchros…and I think that’s it…?

Either way, this guy is a great addition to any bug strategy and had a lot of hype before his release. I think the only thing keeping him from seeing more play is just from the lack of viability of bug decks in general. Beetroopers, Battlewasps, and Digital Bugs are ALMOST good, but they’re not quite there. If they ever receive some other broken bug card, then I could see Dragonbite going up in playability as well.
