Andrew Dill Subject: Grand Kai Qualifier tournament report I went to Archon this weekend to try and get 20 + points so I could go to the GKI (I already had 8 from making top 64 at worlds, so all I needed to do was make Top 32 here and I would have 20 points). Well The day started out just a little slow, but not too bad compared to other major tournaments I have been to. I believe there was around 110 people there, including the world champion, Dustin himself, using an interesting Blue (Cell Saga Mastery) Vinegar deck. Anyway, I had a friend there too, he didn't do quite as well as he had hoped (only 2 out 6), but it's all good. So there were 6 rounds, and with the number of people there everyone that was 4 for 6 would make it, except two people (and those two that didn't make it were not happy!) For this tournament I used my blue Roshi (Earth) Dragon Ball deck. Its record combined at worlds and the grand kai qualifier is 8 wins and 3 losses, so not too bad. Round 1: I didn't get off to a very good start, but this would prove to be my only loss until after the cut was made. I faced a red (Trunks Saga Mastery) master roshi dragon's victory deck. It used Kami Fades, but ended up winning by anger. This was quite disappointing being my first game and all; I mean who still uses Kami Fades!! Come On!! It also didn't help that he got long journey first turn and got breakthrough drill, caught off guard drill (Naming blue betrayal), and red tectical drill; although it didn't hurt that much with me having west kai sensei. Round 2: I faced a 5 level Saiyan Goku deck (Buu Saga Mastery). I had no problems what-so-ever with this deck. I felt kind of bad though because I think the kid just started playing that day, he his playmat and everything. Got all seven dragon balls out within about 5-10 minutes. Round 3: In this round I faced a blue (Cell Saga Mastery) Majin Babidi deck. It didn't do that well against me, it didn't get a single ally out, and didn't get anything to stop me or my dragon balls. Another 5-10 minute win. Round 4: In this round I faced a red (trunks saga mastery) majin buu deck. Not too hard, no problems, everything went my way, another fast win. Round 5: Android 17 (Capsule corp Level 1) No Tokui-Waza Dende Dragon Ball deck. Wow, this was probably my toughest opponent. He must have stopped about 8-10 of my combat cards with his power. I eventually pulled out the win, but it was not easy at all. He had 4 dragon balls out by the time I had all of my 7, so pretty close. Round 6: My final match was against a Freestyle (Buu Saga Mastery) Goku Dende Dragon Ball Deck. Had a little trouble, considering all I had were Don't You Just Hate That and Blue betrayals to remove his drills. Not nearly as hard as my last match, but a little difficult. So, here ends the regular portion of the tournament, with me winning 5 out of 6. Top 32: I lost my first match to a red (trunks saga mastery) majin buu anger deck. He got City In Turmoil out a couple of times, but not for too long, I got my winter countrysides back in pretty quick. The person I was facing got amazingly lucky. First he got a Gohan's Kick, which doesn't happen that much with 85 card decks. Then next turn, guess what he gets! Yep, that's right, Dende 3! So he gets back Gohan's kick and another attack I believe; then of course he steals earth 3 that turn with all the damage he dealt, and gets 3 more cards. Anyway, at that point I was doing pretty well after what just happened. I am almost out of life cards, when he places in play Kami Fades. And that was the game right there; I believe I had 3 or 4 balls in play. And for doing so well and making top 32 the only actual physical prize I got was a whole 3 packs of fusion! But everyone got a Human Extinction Attack just for entering, so that was cool. But hey, I got what I came there for, my other 12 kai points! So I am getting ready for the GKI coming up! ________________________________________________________
