Djinn Releaser of Rituals – #THSF-EN036

When you Ritual Summon a monster, you can banish this card from your Graveyard as 1 of the monsters required for the Ritual Summon. If a player Ritual Summons using this card, the other player cannot Special Summon while that Ritual Summoned monster is face-up on the field.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Djinn Releaser of Rituals is the Throwback Thursday choice and when legal was a one-of in all Ritual Decks, no exceptions, no questions asked.

Level 3 DARK Fiend that allowed you to Ritual Summon while using it in the grave. Where it was mattered not for its effect: No Special Summons for your opponent while you had the Ritual Monster on the field that you used Releaser to help summon. The only Djinn to be banned, and for good reason. Players would make a big Ritual Monster with negation power and add this card into the Ritual Summon and that was it for the opponent on turn one.

Nekroz notably used this card to become a dominant force in the meta. Nekroz hated on Extra Deck monsters and with their effects to punish monsters from the Extra Deck alongside this locking out all Special Summons in general, combined with all the Nekroz Ritual Monsters (excluding Clausolas) having 2300ATK or more, how was an opponent going to make headway? Your best bet was “Caveman Yu-Gi-Oh” and use blunt force against them, however they usually had an answer to that. Not saying Libromancer would have the same tier-warping effects Nekroz had, they can’t, but this card would certainly help their deck, as it would also help other Ritual Decks like Drytron.

Small monster that on its own isn’t useful at all, but when combined into a Ritual Summon is devastating to the opponent. Even with the expanded card pool we have now there isn’t any talk about it being released.

Throwback Thursday this week gives us one of the few Ritual-related cards to be banned from the game: Djinn Releaser of Rituals.

Djinn is a Level 3 DARK Fiend with 1200 ATK and 2000 DEF. A strong DEF stat alongside being a Level 3 DARK Fiend is good. First effect lets you use this from the graveyard by banishing it for a Ritual Summon, helping you get your Level requirement without having it in hand or on field, and being Level 3 should go a decent way. The main effect here is the monster that was Ritual Summoned using this card gains the effect to prevent the other player from Special Summoning while that Ritual Monster is face-up on the field, which can be pretty insane to give to a very strong Ritual Monster. Anything with protection, whether on its own or via other effects, while also having good stats could make this pretty unfair to have be the gatekeeper from the opponent’s Special Summons. The best Deck for this was always Nekroz, which is what got the card banned in the TCG in 2015, and a small package of Nekroz stuff very recently got it banned in the OCG. The card is annoying, as the bonus effect is better the stronger the Ritual Monster is, and since it doesn’t properly give the monster the effect, you can’t realy negate it. Annoying card.

We couldn’t spend the week talking about a Ritual Theme without Throwback Thursday being some kind of Ritual Support, right?  Djinn Releaser of Rituals has seen fair play over the years here, allowing you to remove itself from the Grave as part of your Ritual Summon, so that gives you 3 Levels here of your combined Total, without it having to be in a more regular place.  You do get the bonus of your opponent being locked out of Special Summons while your Ritual Monster brought out via this card is face-up on the Field.  This Monster also benefits from being Dark, as well as a Fiend, where applicable.  Protecting/keeping that Ritual face-up is obviously key to the Special Summon lockout, which doesn’t DIRECTLY effect this card, or its score, but it is a factor.

Throwback Thursday is sure to reawaken some nightmares for players around for Nekroz format– Djinn Releaser of Rituals is a level 3 DARK Fiend monster from the Djinn Ritual mini-archetype, and is currently banned in both regions for reasons that will be very apparent. Being a DARK Fiend is pretty nice, and level 3 also opens up possibilities with Burning Abyss and Phantom Knights decks. With an unremarkable 1200 attack, it won’t be beating over most things, but 2000 defense lets it be an emergency wall (though if you’re setting Djinn Releaser, you’re probably losing).

Djinn Releaser has two effects that, while not once per turn, aren’t really concerning since just one is normally sufficient. Its first effect allows you to banish it from the Graveyard as a material for a Ritual Summon. In ancient times, you’d use Lavalval Chain as a way to send it straight to the Graveyard, though with that card banned, you could still access Djinn Releaser through Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal (especially in Drytron), Cherubini, Ebon Angel of the Burning Abyss, or even Tour Guide of the Underworld and Mathematician. Point being, accessing Djinn Releaser is still quite easy, and among the cards I mentioned, Drytron can summon Beatrice with ease (fortunately, they can’t take full advantage of Djinn Releaser if they’re using Meteonis Drytron). Djinn Releaser’s second effect is the main reason it’s banned, forming the infamous “Djinn Lock”; while the Ritual monster Ritual summoned using it is face up on the field, the opposing player cannot Special Summon. This already should sound pretty scary; Nekroz decks would use it to summon Nekroz of Clausolas, which not only had its own built-in quick negate, but also protection thanks to Nekroz of Gungnir and the other Nekroz hand traps. Unsurprisingly, in addition to Nekroz itself getting gutted (though it has since been restored over time), Lavalval Chain and Djinn Releaser were both banned. Considering that we’re in a bit of a Ritual renaissance, with Drytron still doing well and Libromancer seeing mild success, I can’t see Djinn Releaser coming back any time soon.

Art: 3/5 She’s pretty ugly, but there’s a funny charm to it, reminds me of a Power Rangers monster or something.
