Hello Pojo Fans,

Chimeratech Fortress Dragon is our Throwback Thursday choice for the week and fitting as it can be a Super Poly version of a Fusion Monster.

You need Cyber Dragon, so it isn’t as splashable as it could be, but this card was in a ton of Side Deck and Extra Decks long ago. Players would side in Cyber Dragon and then wreck their opponents field by Special Summoning their sided in Cyber Dragon and using it along with a field full of Machine-Type monsters to summon this and have a potential OTK. Chimeratech could reliably become 4000ATK in those days. Even if Chimeratech would bite the dust via something like Solemn Warning, you still cleared out your opponent’s field for pretty much nothing. Sending rather than destroyed would often avoid giving your opponent something back when you’d use their monsters as Fusion Material. Many decks ran Cyber Dragon just as an extender, so getting this support was incredible. Several more variations of this monster would be released, and they all possess their own charm, but this one is the most basic and easiest to cause a blowout of your opponent. The lure of doing the side in of three Cyber Dragons and one of these now would be if you would run into Sky Strikers and would want an out to one or more of their Extra Deck Sky Strikers.

Machine archetypes aren’t rampant anymore in the game, so the play of this card has dropped off since. That doesn’t make it a bad card, the times just change. Chimeratech Fortress Dragon is a great card for Machine decks, as well as a good counter to Machine decks if they ever show themselves in numbers again.

Throwback Thursday this week goes to a card used often to counter Machine strategies: Chimeratech Fortress Dragon.

Fortress Dragon is a Level 8 DARK Machine Fusion with 0 ATK and DEF. Stats aren’t great, but it can at least get some with its effect, plus a great combo of DARK and Machine. Fusion Materials are Cyber Dragon and any 1+ Machines, which is easy. It cannot be used as Fusion Material and it must first be summoned from the Extra Deck by sending the above materials from either field to the graveyard, so it’s great to clear the opponent’s board of Machines if you have a Cyber Dragon. It’s why you always see this pop up when Machines are more prevalent. Other effect just makes this card’s original ATK 1000 times the number of materials, so a guaranteed 2000 at least, which is smaller than Cyber Dragon, but anything beyond that and you are stronger. Fortress isn’t something you’ll always see in a meta, since Machines aren’t always tier 1, but when they’re around, you can expect to see Chimeratech Fortress.

I’m not sure how the week or Throwback Thursday got us here, but we do see a Monster today in Chimeratech Fortress Dragon.  Level 8, Dark/Machine, all great there, Cyber Dragon and any number of other generic Machines required for Fusion here.  Can’t be used as Fusion Material itself (which isn’t good, ever, but I don’t mind given how heavily you may invest in this, and since it came from the Extra Deck anyway originally) and the cards for Fusion can be sent from EITHER Field (but only the Field) and there’s not much else here.  Attack becomes 1000x the number of Material used for it (and there are ways…Super Poly immediately comes to mind, for one) but it’s going to be very dependent on what you and your opponent are playing.  Protection will be important, given this has none at al, and without it, then infinite attack doesn’t mean anything when your Monster runs into a Magic/Trap/Monster Effect.  That’s the realistic, cynical view of this card in the now…in the day (Alex is old) this guy did see plenty of play.  It’s been retrained many a time, with varying levels of success and Effects.  The ease in dropping this is…well…easy, but with Machines not being the dominant force they once were, there’s not so much room for it anymore.  If you’re playing Machines, and need a Level 8 you can drop so easily, than by all means.  The (Machine) Extra Deck these days is rather loaded (see what I did there?) but this card could rise again.

Rating:  2.5/5

Art:  4/5  It’s another take on Cyber Dragon, looks rather spacey and cosmic, but kinda creepy as well.  I like i, and all the stars as well as the rainbow background drop are really awesome

Throwback Thursday seems a little weird this week, but it’ll all make sense when you see tomorrow’s card. Chimeratech Fortress Dragon hails from 2010, being one of Cyber Dragon’s many, many Fusion forms (not unlike a certain lore monster); it’s a level 8 DARK Machine Fusion monster, contrasting with the ordinarily LIGHT Cyber Dragon cards, though it’s right at home with the DARK Chimeratech mini-archetype. It only takes Cyber Dragon and any number of Machine monsters, though we’ll get to why this monster is a little unorthodox. With a whopping zero for both attack and defense, there’s clearly more to this card than at a glance.

It’s a recurring joke that Machine decks are their own worst enemy in this game, and Fortress is one of the reasons why. Fortress can’t be used as Fusion Material, and must first be Special Summoned by its own condition, sending its Fusion Materials (Cyber Dragon and at least one other Machine monster) from either side of the field to the Graveyard, with its original attack becoming 1000 times the number of monsters used for its summon. At minimum, we’re looking at 2000 attack, which is relatively mediocre, but against a Machine deck, it probably won’t be hard to get over 5000 attack, and that’s not including any random Machine monsters you’re throwing onto the board yourself. Basically, if your opponent is playing a Machine deck (DNA Surgery is a cute “combo” but not viable at all in competitive play!), you can wipe out their entire board and gain a big beater as a bonus just by summoning a Cyber Dragon. Against non-Machine decks, it doesn’t really do much, but it can function as an emergency beater for Cyber Dragon if you find yourself unable to make the other Fusions for some reason. Side note, when we get Clockwork Night in TCG, Fortress will get a lot stronger, so Cyber Dragon players might want to keep their eyes peeled.

Advanced: 3.5/5

Art: 4/5 Some people I know think it’s a little silly, but I actually really like the bird-esque head that this form and Megafleet get, it’s somehow both goofy and threatening.
