Simple yet effective, Champion of the Parish is the one-drop that makes the Modern Humans deck work (and did a lot in Standard, back in the day). He’s capable of getting big very quickly as an early drop, and while he makes for a dismal top deck in a late-game scenario, he needs little investment in an early game to become a massive threat on his own. He’s not flashy, but he’s quite good at what he does and is a key piece behind one of the more threatening aggro decks in Modern doing what it does.

It’s been a long time since Champion of the Parish devastated Standard as part of the Naya Blitz deck, but he’s far from forgotten. It turns out he does much the same thing even in much larger and more threat-diverse formats – humans are usually the most abundant creature type in Magic sets, and an aggressive deck can be very hard to deal with when it can go wide (lots of creatures ) and tall (one or more big creatures) at the same time. Barring some kind of major shift in flavor elements, he’s only going to get better, too.
