After our break, it is time to resume with Centiskorch (SW – Battle Styles 030/163).  Please note that I’ll be shifting to an “abridged” style of review for the foreseeable future; I am currently unable to spend as much time per review as I once did.  Centiskorch is a [R] type, Stage 1 Pokémon with 130 HP, [W] Weakness, no Resistance, Retreat Cost [CC], Ability, and attack.  The stats are pretty standard fare, not bad but not really good, either.

The Ability, “Overheater”, means Burn won’t naturally go away.  Burn can still be cured through any other means; Overheater just means you ignore the results of the coin flip during the Pokémon Checkup.  In a metagame of 2HKOs and OHKOs, where shaking Special Conditions is relatively simple… Overheater doesn’t actually do much.   “Bursting Inferno” is Centiskorch’s attack; for [RRRC] it does 130 damage and Burns your opponent’s Active.  This is decent; the Energy cost is what holds it back, as you can’t easily cover it in a single turn.

So, what happens when you put it all together?  Not much. If you insist, you could build a deck around this effect.  If you have some (unusual) slower-paced deck, where you’re Burning your opponent’s Pokémon but otherwise not scoring fast KOs, Centiskorch would likely be a good Bench-sitter. In most decks, though, Burn Checks aren’t likely to happen more than once or twice, and Overheater only matters when the check would have failed.  This kind of effect suits a Basic or a Stadium better than a Stage 1.  Still, it isn’t hopeless, so I’ll be generous.
