Maze of Memories finally released, bringing us the remaining 20 History Archive Collection cards we were waiting on for classic anime throwbacks. Today, we start the first of 10 weekends covering all these cards by starting with a retrain of Yugi’s classic Ritual: Black Luster Soldier – Legendary Swordsman.

BLS – Legendary Swordsman is a Level 8 EARTH Warrior Ritual with 3000 ATK and 2500 DEF. Stats are pretty strong on a Level 8, Warrior is always great, and EARTH is a solid Attribute. The Ritual Spells you can use for this are Chaos Form or Super Soldier Ritual, so standard Black Luster Soldier Ritual Spells for the modern era basically. Super Soldier Synthesis might be a better Ritual Spell though since it lets you use materials in the hand and Deck. You can also reveal this card during the Draw Phase to replace your normal draw for the turn in exchange for searching any Ritual Spell, which should most likely help you Ritual Summon this card if you don’t have the necessary Spell already. Your opponent cannot activate cards or effects during the Battle Phase, ensuring you get your attacks off without a hitch. Finally, when this attacking card that was Ritual Summoned using a Normal Monster destroys an opponent’s monster in battle, you can shuffle all cards they control into the Deck. A very powerful field wipe indeed, you just have to run the Normal Monster brick to use for this card’s Ritual Summon. It’s a fair trade-off over just letting that effect be free, cause otherwise that might be too good. Anyways, it’s easily better than the classic Black Luster Soldier, which is easy to top considering that had no effects, so now it just comes down to preference over this or Super Soldier with both having good cases to be worth running.

Advanced Rating: 3.5/5

Art: 5/5 So the name comes from the manga where Pegasus called this card “The Legendary Swordsmaster Chaos Soldier” with Chaos Soldier being the original OCG name for Black Luster Soldier. The first effect is a reference to Yugi looking at his hand, seeing what he has, and needing that critical card to complete the Black Luster Ritual. Finally, the third effect basically references Mai surrendering the Duel because she knew her Deck couldn’t defeat the Black Luster Soldier.
