Alpha, the Master of Beasts

Alpha, the Master of Beasts – #PHRA-EN023

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must first be Special Summoned (from your hand) while the total ATK of all monsters your opponent controls is more than that of all monsters you control. You can target any number of Beast, Beast-Warrior, and/or Winged Beast monsters you control; return them to the hand, then, return face-up monsters your opponent controls to the hand, equal to the number of cards you returned to the hand, also for the rest of this turn, “Alpha, the Master of Beasts” you control cannot attack directly. You can only use this effect of “Alpha, the Master of Beasts” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Alpha, the Master of Beasts had a good amount of hype coming out, but with no in-person play, it’s tough to see the card’s ceiling.

Easy to Special Summon as long as your opponent has higher ATK total than you regarding monsters on the field. Alpha with its 3000ATK is a huge beatstick, but the wide-reaching bounce effect may be its best characteristic. We’ve seen bounce effects like this before, but never on a big monster. 1-for-1 bounce per monsters you bounce that locks out Alpha from hitting directly for the turn. Use Alpha to clear out the troublesome monsters, then use it to get rid of the highest ATK monster your opponent has. Alpha can bounce itself to get rid of a monster then come back as long as you are down in total ATK on the field. Because it can bounce itself and Special Summon itself again, Alpha can be splashed into many decks, but Melffy are likely the best deck for itself because of Melffy triggering off bouncing back. You don’t like having less ATK than your opponent, but being able to drop this first-turn, get rid of a monster and do it over and over is an annoying way for you to frustrate your opponent: if they over-commit to counter Alpha, Alpha can potentially drop itself twice on the field and attack a monster.

While not needing to be in a Beast, Beast-Warrior, Or Winged Beast deck, it’d be interesting to see this teched into a consistent archetype from one of those three types.

In the middle of the week we see an alternative option to the limited Dinowrestler Pankratops that can be more generic in use if using Beasts, Beast-Warriors, Winged Beasts: Alpha, the Master of Beasts.

Alpha is a Level 8 EARTH Beast with 3000 ATK and 2500 DEF. Great stats and Type/Attribute combo give a good start. It cannot be Normal Summoned or Set and must first be Special Summoned from the hand by the opponent having a higher combined ATK among their monsters than you do, which can be easy to do and this summoning condition isn’t a hard once per turn in case the opponent has a lot of strong monsters, meaning multiple Alphas. The hard once per turn lets you target any of your Beasts, Beast-Warriors, or Winged Beasts to bounce them to the hand and an equal number of monsters the opponent controls, which is a simple and easy way to clear an opponent’s board. At worst, you can just target Alpha to bounce and get an opponent’s monster out of the way while also being allowed to resummon the Alpha from hand. Any Alpha, the Master of Beasts you control cannot attack directly the turn you use this effect, which balances the summoning condition not being a once per turn. It’s a nice card and while it doesn’t replace Pankratops, it’s a good alternative for what it does. They’re both still different cards, though.

Alpha the Master of Beasts is an interesting card.  Earth/Beast type, both well supported, with BEWD stats at 3000/2500 respectively.  Not being able to be Normal Summoned or Set is bad.  An odd Special Summon clause here drops this to your Field if the total attack of your opponent’s Monsters is greater than yours.  So there’s going to be plenty of time this will be dead weight in your Hand.  Returning any combination of Beast, Beast Warrior, and Winged Beasts to your Hand to return an equal number of face up Monsters back to their Hand.  Clearing the Field or even ridding a big threat (or possibly more) certainly is good.  It can’t attach directly BUT you can Special Summon three of these in a Turn if you have them and meet the criteria.  That opens up Extra Deck plays and the fact that you still have Normal and Special Summons.  Potential is here definitely for big plays and maybe some wins.
