Agido the Ancient Sentinel – #MAMA-EN028

If a card(s) is sent from the hand or Deck to your opponent’s GY (except during the Damage Step): You can Special Summon this card from your hand, then you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 EARTH Fairy monster from your GY, except “Agido the Ancient Sentinel”. If this card is sent from the hand or Deck to the GY: You can activate this effect; each player sends the top 5 cards of their Deck to the GY (or their entire Deck, if less than 5), then, if “Exchange of the Spirit” is in your GY, you can send 5 more cards from the top of either player’s Deck to the GY. You can only use each effect of “Agido the Ancient Sentinel” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Agido the Ancient Sentinel is the final retrain we’ll be looking at of the Ishizu monsters, and one that, like its teammates, have found meta success.

Whenever your opponent sends a card from the hand or Deck to the grave Agido can Special Summon itself and then get you another Level 4 EARTH Fairy Special Summon, this time from the grave. This Special Summon effect is easily triggered, as most decks send from the hand or Deck to the grave in some fashion at some point. The popular decks right now though do a lot of forced milling, which only helps to Special Summon Agido. You’ll want to get some EARTH Fairy monsters into the grave first before dropping Agido so you get not only its Special Summon, but the grave one as well. Instant Rank 4 or Link 2 capabilities in addition to whatever effect(s) may trigger on the monster’s summon.

If you happen to send Agido to the grave in some way from the hand or Deck, Agido will force a 5-card mill for both players. Like Kelbek and Keldo before it, the mill is in full effect with these retrains. If you happen to have “Exchange of the Spirit” in the grave in some form, you get an extra 5-card mill for yourself or your opponent. With all the milling these new retrains do I’d love to see an Empty Jar deck work them in. Can you even imagine with Tearlaments and the Ishizu monsters now being out what “That Grass Looks Greener” would be like? Complete utter nightmares. A potential 10-card mill for yourself will only push your plays further through the other retrains hitting the grave and triggering their effects, Tearlaments Fusion Summoning/other effect(s) of theirs, and in other decks where milling is the key to plays, Agido helps quicken the pace. The 5-card mill is great on its own, so much that you could throw the retrains into any deck that loves having stuff in the grave like the classics: Zombies, Lightsworns, and Shaddolls.

Agido is just as good as the others. So much so that it was hit with Keldo in the OCG. Special Summon off any card hitting the grave from the hand or Deck and then grants you a potential +1 in addition to its Special Summon. If it hits the grave from the hand or Deck you force a mill and get a mill for yourself. You don’t need “Exchange of the Spirit” but with all the milling you could run one and be good. I want to see these monsters splashed into other archetypes. They won’t work as dominantly as they have in the Tearlament archetype, but that was a given.

I did rank this alongside Kelbek in my Top 10 as I mentioned it was good for the same reason that Kelbek was, but we are here to review it as there are still differences between this and Kelbek, so here we have Agido the Ancient Sentinel.

Agido 2.0 is a Level 4 EARTH Fairy with 1500 ATK and 1300 DEF. Okay-ish stats and that solid combination of EARTH/Fairy. First effect triggers if a card(s) is sent from the hand or Deck to the opponent’s graveyard (except during the Damage Step), letting you Special Summon this card from your hand and then you can summon a Level 4 EARTH Fairy from the graveyard, besides another copy of this. Considering you’re likely sending the opponent’s cards from Deck to grave with either Kelbek or this, the effect is easy to pull off and honestly helps make a fast Rank 4 like Abyss Dweller, which is good in this meta. The second effect is the main effect, similar to Kelbek, where sending this from the hand or Deck to the graveyard lets you make both players send the top 5 cards of their Deck to the graveyard, then if Exchange of the Spirit is in your graveyard, you can make either player send another top 5 cards from their Deck to the graveyard. More milling is always good, and here you can potentially get more mills for yourself if you get Exchange of the Spirit into your graveyard. Hard once per turn on each effect once again, which is fine. This is commonly the only Ishizu monster ran at 1 in most builds, probably due to the hand effect not being as disruptive as Kelbek, but honestly I do like running more in Decks that would use the Ishizu cards, as more opportunities to mill is never a bad thing. Agido is as solid as Kelbek is, since that mill 5 is so good.

Agido the Ancient Sentinel, as we HAD to cover all 3, no?  Level 4, Earth/Fairy (who guessed?) and 1500/1300 still don’t originally win much for you.  Special Summon from your Hand if sent to your opponent’s Grave (save the Damage Step) from the Hand or Deck.  Another easy trick to accomplish in an Ishizu build, especially with the cards in our disposal these days.  Following this, you +1 into a Special Summon of any Earth/Fairy Level 4 Monster from your Grave, excluding itself, naturally.  If sent, again from Hand or Deck, but here to either Grave, you can then have each player mill their top 5 cards straight to their Grave.  This time, having Exchange in your Grave gives you the ability to send an ADDITIONAL 5 cards, from either Deck, after this.  So that’s 10 cards, and while I still don’t like the forced synergy, this works better.  It’s easier to do, and the payoff is better too.  Each Effect is Once per Turn, and it certainly needs to be in each instance.  Honestly, all three of these guys probably could’ve blocked together into one spot on our countdown.

Art:  1.5/5  TOO damn creepy.  That’s a no.  You can’t convince me that’s a Fairy.  No sale.

Back to the monster lineup; Agido the Ancient Sentinel is yet another level 4 EARTH Fairy monster, with an unimpressive statline of 1500 attack and 1300 defense. Oddly, Agido is the first and currently only Ishizu card to be hit in the OCG, being limited in a previous banlist, so surely something is up with this bizarre monster.

Like the others, Agido has two hard once per turn effects, the first allowing Agido to Special Summon itself if a card is sent to your opponent’s Graveyard from their hand or deck, much like Kelbek the Ancient Vanguard. Unlike Kelbek, Agido’s bonus effect is more combo oriented than disruption, allowing you to Special Summon a level 4 EARTH Fairy as well. Bringing back another Ishizu monster or a Vernusylph helps set up Xyz plays, since otherwise the Ishizu monsters aren’t terribly useful on their own while on the field. Agido’s other effect is its claim to fame; if it’s sent from the hand or deck to the Graveyard, you can mill the top five cards of both player’s decks, then if Exchange of the Spirit is in the Graveyard, you can mill another five from either deck. It wasn’t uncommon to see Agido get discarded by Herald of the Orange Light so Ishizu Tear decks could kickstart their combos even before their first turn, and any time Agido itself is milled, it’ll extend a combo basically for free. This probably resulted in Agido being limited in the OCG, though oddly, Agido was already being cut down in Ishizu Tearlaments decks along with Exchange of the Spirit being cut entirely, presumably due to Agido potentially helping the opponent in a mirror match. Agido’s still a strong card to look out for, though it’s a bit more harmless than it looks.

Art: 3/5 Unlike the others this art is…pretty much the same, just flipped and zoomed in a little, but at least Agido still got the modern card glow-up.
