On to the actual list. A reminder that this is my OPINION only, so no
Hatemail, please! Thank you!
The Best and Worst of each type in each set.
Pokemon
Base Set
Fire type
#1. Ninetails. In two turns he can do 160 damage. 160! And people say that's
not good?
#2. Arcanine. 100 HP, 50 damage or 80 if necessary, and only an uncommon! Wow!
#3. Charmeleon. 80 HP, 50 damage. Not better than Scyther, but not bad.
Worst: Vulpix. Ok, Ninetails is awesome, but this guy belongs on the bench,
waiting for ninetails to appear from your deck.
Grass type
#1. Venusaur. 100 HP, 60 damage, and a pokemon power to distribute those
energy. Awe-inspiring
#2. Nidoking. The Nidoran Male family's powerhouse. 20 damage and autopoison
for 20, instead of 10, damage. Mama Mia!
#3. Beedrill. OK HP, 40 and possible poison. Good enough for me!
Worst: Nidoran Male. Possible 30, but only if you flip heads. only 40 HP.
Ouch.
Water type
#1. Blastoise. A pokemon power to top all. 60 Damage. 100 HP. Are you telling
me that's not good?!?
#2. Gyarados. 100 Hp, 50 damage, and 40 damage with possible Paralysis. Only
bad thing about it is Magikarp!
#3. Poliwrath. 90 HP is okay, but 40 damage with a built in ER is great!
Worst: Starmie. Recover stalls, and star freeze is not worth the amount of
energy it costs.
Normal type
#1. Chansey. 120 Hp, stalling attack move, Chansey has it all.
#2. Farfetch'd. 50 HP is okay, and 30 damage on turn two (with a DCE) Is good.
#3. Pidgeotto. 20 damage with a built in Gust of Wind is OK.
Worst: Porygon. 30 HP, no damaging attacks. I keep porygon in my binder.
Electric type
#1. Electabuzz. A staple in Electric decks. Need I say more?
#2. Raichu. Agility is nice, and Thunder can take out big nasties.
#3. Zapdos. No weakness, 60 or 100 damage, and a fighting resistance. That's
good.
Worst: Voltorb. 40 HP, and attack for 10 damage. Ouch.
Fighting type
#1. Hitmonchan. An excellent pokemon. a staple in fighting decks. Need I say
more?
#2. Machamp. An excellent Pokemon Power, and an excellent attack make an
excellent pokemon.
#3. Dugtrio. The electric killer. Even Kills Zapdos.
Worst: Onix. 90 HP is Ok, and 10 damage is OK, but it can go bye-bye easily.
Psychic type
#1. Kadabra. 50 damage, and an attack that can heal. the Psychic Killer.
#2. Alakazam. Bad attack, good pokemon power.
#3. Jynx. Meditate kills more as the damage goes on.
Worst: Gastly. Same story as Porygon.
Jungle Set
Fire type
#1. Rapidash. 30 for agility, free retreat cost, and a colorless attack make
him a winner.
#2. Flareon. 60 damage isn't bad, and neither is Quick Attack.
Grass type
#1. Scyther. 60 on turn 2 can happen with scyther. A free retreat cost is
nice, too.
#2. Pinsir. 60 HP is bad, but 50 damage is good.
#3. Vileplume. Heal is amazing when paired with Mr. Mime.
Worst: Victreebel. Worse than Weepinbell because of it doing only 20!
Water type
#1. Vaporeon: 80 HP, Quick attack, and water gun are all nice.
#2. Seaking. 30 damage for 2 energy is nice, and 70 HP is good.
#3. Goldeen. Free retreat cost lets it stay out at the beginning of the game,
retreating as needed.
Normal type
#1. Clefable. A good extension to clefairy, adding HP.
#2. Fearow. Agility on anyone is nice, and free retreat cost is good, too.
#3. Kangaskahn. A substitute Chansey with drawing power.
Worst: Snorlax. 4 retreat cost?!?
Electric type
#1. Electrode. Give raindance decks a shock!
#2. Pikachu: Bench destruction decks.
#3. Jolteon. Splashability.
Fighting type
#1. Primape. 50 damage. Add a full heal and you're in the pink.
#2. Rhydon. Save yourself. Only use Horn attack.
#3. Rhyhorn. Better than my other choices.
Worst: Mankey. 30 HP, and scratch? Puh-lesse.
Psychic type
#1. Mr. Mime. A jynx copycat, with an excellent pokemon power.
Fossil Set
Fire type
#1. Magmar. Two good attacks. The fire haymaker.
#2. Moltres. Wildfire. Need I say more?
Grass type
#1. Muk. An excellent pokemon power, destroying blastoise, Mr. Mime, and More!
#2. Golbat. It can heal itself!
#3. Arbok. 20 and autopoison. Amazing!
Worst: Weezing. Does Koffing really need him?
Water type
#1. Articuno. No weakness, an attack that does 30, and an attack that does
50. Wow!
#2. Lapras. 30 on turn 3, and possible confusion.
#3. Golduck. Hyper Beam is Awesome!
Worst: Shellder. 30 HP, and no damaging attacks. Owitch!
Normal type
#1. Ditto. Transform is great!
#2. Dragonite. Step in is OK.
Electric type
#1. Zapdos. The ability to damage the bench that much an ability worth having.
#2. Raichu. 30 and 10 to 3 members of the bench. That's pretty good!
#3. Magneton. The ability to get around resistance is OK.
Fighting type
#1. Hitmonlee. 50 damage is awesome!
#2. Aerodactyl. He stops all evolutions!
#3. Golem. 60 damage is pretty good.
Worst: Kabuto. Same deal as Mankey.
Psychic type
#1. Gengar. Dark mind is cool!
#2. Haunter. Transparency is really cool!
#3. Hypno. Dark mind is powerful.
Worst: Slowpoke. No damaging attacks.
Rocket Set
Fire type
#1. Dark Flareon . HP is low, but his second attack is good!
#2. Dark Charizard. Continuos Fireball is Great!
#3. Dark Charmeleon. If you're good at getting heads, this card is for you!
Worst: Dark Rapidash. Regular Rapidash is so much better.
Grass type
#1. Dark Muk. Good pokemon power, and good attack.
#2. Dark Arbok. Autopoison and 10 damage to every benched pokemon is really
good!
#3. Dark Weezing. Stun Gas has a good effect either way!
Worst: Oddish. No damaging attacks.
Water type
#1. Dark Blastoise. 70 Damage is great!
#2. Dark Golduck. Fits in psychic decks, and use it to beat colorless pokemon.
#3. Dark Vaporeon. Whirlpool is great!
Worst: Magikarp, as usual.
Normal type
#1. Dark Dragonair. Darwin deck? oh, yeah!
#2. Porygon. New and improved!
#3. Eevee. Gotta love that sand-attack!
Worst: Meowth. Flip a coin just to do 20 damage?!? No way!
Electric type
#1. Dark Jolteon. Lightning flash is like, but better than, sand-attack!
#2. Dark Electrode. The ability to power up the bench and do damage? Oh, yeah!
#3. Dark Magneton. Magnetic lines is not as good as whirlpool, but it'll do!
Worst: Magnemite. 2 energy to do 20? Voltorb from rocket can do 20 for 1
energy!
Fighting type
#1. Dark Dugtrio. Good attack, good pokemon power. Great!
#2. Dark Machamp. 30 for 2 energy and Fling are both good.
#3. Dark Machoke. Good Disruption attacks.
Worst: Dark Primape. He could do 50 to himself after that attack and pokemon
power!
Psychic type
#1. Dark Alakazam. Mind shock is good, teleport blast is better.
#2. Dark Hypno. 20 Damage for 1 energy? Amazing!
#3. Dark Kadabra. Overcomes resistance.
Worst: Dark Drowzee. OK Pokemon power, bad attack. Sleep isn't that useful.
Trainers
Base Set
#1. Bill. 2 cards, no catch.
#2. Super potion. 40 damage healed, only 1 energy discarded.
#3. Super Energy Removal. 2 energies of your opponents down the drain, one of
your energies down the drain.
Worst: Clefairy doll. Why have it in a deck?
Jungle Set
Poke Ball. An OK trainer.
Fossil Set
#1. Recycle. A card out of your discard pile.
#2. Energy search. Handy in Potpourri decks.
#3. Mr. Fuji. Good for Stall decks.
Worst: Mysterious Fossil. Aerodactyl is it's only good evolution.
Rocket Set
#1. Nightly Garbage Run. An amazing card, better than recycle.
#2. Challenge. Running low on Basics? No Problem.
#3. Goop gas attack. Foil your opponents big pokemon powers!
Worst: Sleep! Sleep isn't that good of an ailment.
Energy
#1. All Basic energy. No deck can run without it.
#2. Rainbow Energy. Good in Potpourri decks.
#3. Double Colorless Energy. 2 colorless energies in one turn's deployment.
#4. Full heal Energy. No more trainer space for full heal!
#5. Potion Energy. Heals 10 damage and provides energy.
