This is Rob Tennant again. Now I know this isn't
EXACTLY a single card strategy but it's awfully close.
Today I wanna talk about Base set Machop vs.
Hitmonchan. Now i know right away that all you die
hard Haymaker players are probably sayin this is a
dumb article. But before you close this and say how
much better hitmonchan is just listen.
Hitmonchan I'll agree is a good solid basic with good
Hp (70). And I'll also agree that his second attack
(Special Punch) is also superrior to Machop's Low
Kick. But one thing I ALWAYS look for in a Pokemon is
their retreat cost. And a pokemon that can retreat off
the energy it needs to attack is very powerful<cough
cough machop>. Hitomonchan has 2 retreat..yuck.. Now
sure he can be retreated with a scoop up or a double
colorless but having to resort to a trainer or a
limited energy card just to retreat a pokemon
is..well..bad. Now in a deck that plays one dominate
type and then just a splash of fighting should
consider machop. In my deck "Galloping Genger" which
is all Psychic except for 2 Machop has a point to
prove. Whenever they bring out the all mighty
Electabuzz just put down Machop and retreat your
active (usually haunter) and do a quick Low Kick and
retreat. No scoop up,double colorless, or switch. Just
a quick in and out. I would like to see a hitmonchan
do that.
I'm not sayin that a machop would beat Hitmo in a
fight just that Hitmonchan is not always superrior to
machop. Thank you- Crispy
