Rapidash

Rapidash is probably one of the best pokemon that has been created up to the
release of the Jungle expansion.  Let's look at the card.  1st off,
Rapidash is
fire, with the usual weakness to water, but no retreat costs, which gives
Rapidash the possibility to live longer by retreating when it is necessary,
without having to lose anything.  Agility, which has got to be the best attack
ever created, costs 2 fire and one colorless, but it does thirty damage, more
than that caused by Raichu and Fearow  Agility is better than paralisis
because
it cannot be removed by a full heal and also you can avoid taking damage if
you
kill thier pokemon and they bring out another.  As a backup, Rapidash has
stomp, which uses only colorless energy and is a 20 or 30 attack.  70 HP is a
little low, but that is not much of a price to pay.  Ponyta is also a fairly
decent basic pokemon, with a 30 attack, though it can be a decks downfall if
you have to start with it and the opponent is using a water deck.
