Peter’s Pokemon Flute POKEMON FLUTE: “Choose 1 Basic Pokemon card from your opponent’s discard pile and put it into his or her Bench.” Most comments I hear about this Trainer Card is; “You’ve got to be kidding me.” or, upon deck analysis, “Take this card out of your deck. It’s useless!” The only reason we see this card in a deck is because it’s that ‘left over’ card a player has in his or her collection. So to fill the 60 card required deck count, the only card left to add is that lonely Trainer Card called, Pokemon Flute. by Glenn Magas PokemonMechanic@yahoo.com The card sits in his or her hand during game play, never to be used, or is one of the ‘discard’ cards to fulfill a Super Potion or Super Energy Removal. It has become a useless, ‘discard’ card without the power to thwart an opponent and a card laughed upon by the great deck mechanics of our time. There is a hidden power in EVERY card. Herein lies the power of the Pokemon Flute. Used alone, true, a powerless entity. Used in accordance with other cards and with thought out combinations, it becomes a powerful offense and a deadly weapon! An example: Once upon a time… on the banks of a great ocean in the southwest of a great land lay a small card shop called Little Shop. The patrons of Little Shop were honest folk who shopped contentedly and played Pokemon TCG in the evening and in small gatherings on the weekends. Then one day, an extraordinary thing happened to disturb the peace. Little Shop had always had Pokemon, and a lot too. But they had never been a danger, for the Pokemon trainers had always solved the Pokemon problem in the usual way. With 20 or so Trainer cards and 25 to 30 energy cards. All at once, however, the Pokemon began to multiply with new Pokemon called, Jungle and soon to be Fossil. And soon more to come. A sea of Pokemon Trainers swarmed over Little Shop. They played and attacked with electricity, water, they gnawed, slashed, slapped and hypnotized. They called their decks, Haymakers and Raindancers and they all knew that Trainers were key to becoming a Master at the Pokemon CCG. Just then, while the Trainers milled around, a Pokemon card fell to the floor. And to their surprise, a small little Kid bent over and picked up the card and placed it into his deck. “I’ve beat Trainers who have a Charizard or Flareon,” the Kid announced, “and tonight I’ll beat Trainers with any of their Pokemon.” Ash, the best Trainer of Little Shop, stepped forward and accepted the challenge. And so the cards were shuffled and laid out upon a playing field. Spectators gathered from miles around to watch the battle. Ash charged through with Machop’s, Hitmonchan’s and a Scyther, knocking the Kid’s Pokemon off left to right. But the Kid patiently built up the bench and gained a reasonable amount of strength. But strength alone cannot win so Ash battled on and was confident as a Machamp finally stepped forth to do battle. The sun was still below the horizons, when the sound of a sweet musical instrument wafted through the store. The Kid laid out a Trainer Card which brought snickers and laughter from the gathering. Whispers and grins passed from one to the other. Ash grinned with confidence when the Kid announced, “I’m using Pokemon Flute.” Ash replied with a sarcastic, “Okaaay…” “I choose Machop.” The Kid commanded. So Ash brought forth Machop from his discard pile. Then the Kid announced, “I use Gust of Wind.” Ash still didn’t know what was going on as he brought Machop up for battle. And before anyone could say, “Pika-Pika-Pikachu,” Machop was knocked out with one single blow. Ash followed his own game plan and tried his best to knock out the Kid’s active but when the Kid announced again, “I’m using Pokemon Flute.” Ash was no longer amused. “Gust of Wind!” And again, with one swift blow, Machop was knocked out. Ash took a deep gulp as he played his turn. He had two prizes left. The Kid now only had one. The battle quickly switched advantage. With a silent yet confident roar, the Kid announced one final time, “I’m using Pokemon Flute.” A gasp was heard from the crowd. Some say thunder rolled over head. One felt the earth move. Ash, with shaking fingers, pushed Machop up to the active spot. “Gust of Wind”. There was no need to say anymore. One prize left and Ash’s Pokemon was on the ‘Machop-ing’ block. Little Shop went into complete and dead silence. The Kid smiled as he gathered his last prize and assembled his deck. The Little Shop was rendered speechless as the Kid slipped off his stool and packed his backpack. “Hey, kid.” Ash managed to say. “What’s your name?” “My name? My name is Peter.” He said with a smile. Then Peter walked out into the dark night and disappeared under the glowing moon. The End. I hope this brings more light onto the power of the Pokemon Flute.
