There were a total of 57 players, 27 of them competing in the 15+ division.  We drive up with a contingency of about 8 players from Team Albany.

Round 1 vs. Dave with random Fire/Water deck
Dave is a newer player and a parent of one of the 11-14’s that play.  Dave was playing a Typhlosion-ex / Charizard-ex, Team Aqua’s Crawdunt deck. I go 1st and start with my only Horsea in the deck.  Go figure.  He flips and starts with a Cyndaquil.  I attach a Lightning energy and paralyze the Cyndaquil.  His turn and he benches 2 TA Corphish and says that I’m not weak to you.  He’s not paying attention that I attach a Lightning to Horsea meaning that I also run Lightning types in my deck.  My turn and I top deck my only Kingdra and I have another Lightning energy and do 40 and discard the Fire energy on his Cyndaquil.  He evolves to Quilava and energy searches for a Fire.  He attaches and I tell him that since Quilava is going to die next turn that he should start powering up his bench.  So he does that. All the while he draws no other energies. I draw a Steven’s and get going.  I have get a Dark Electrode going and win the rest of they way against his Crawdunts.  When game is done he looks at all 6 of his prizes and they are energy cards.

Record 1-0

Round 2 vs. Matt (LifeVirus7) with Monarchy
I actually helped Matt the night before on the Deck Forum on pokegym and he is running Monarchy.  I go 1st and he starts with a Wurmple and I start with Dunsparce and Pidgey.  I SAR’s for everything that I need: Dratini, Horsea, and Voltorb.  He Calls for Family and gets all his Nidoran males and females out.  His deck is actually fast and gets going real quick but he cant keep up with all my Darkness Navigation/Trance/ Briney and I win by taking all 6 prizes.  The Dragon Veil Kingdra really helps out against Crystal Shards that devastatet Colorless weakness types like Dragonite.

Record 2-0

Round 3 vs. Joe(Firefighter095reborn) with Zap-Turn-dos
Joe is Gym Leader at the Zombie Plant Pokemon League that we attend.  I knew he was running his Zappy deck and that is why Desert Ruins helps against this match up more so than Rocket’s Tricky Gym in my deck.  I got a great setup and with a well timed Briney on a damaged Dragonite with 3 Dark and I was able to take out a Zappy with a Dark Electrode plus the Desert Ruins damage.  He never really recovered as I built another Dragonite and took all 6 prizes on time.

Record 3-0

Round 4 vs. Chris with Dark DragTrode/ with Rocket’s Sneasal
This is almost a mirror match except that he runs Rockets Sneasal and Wobbuffet in his deck.  We set up and sees that I am playing Dark DragTrode and makes a comment that is why he plays Wobbuffet.  Little did he know that I don’t run Rockets Sneasal in my deck because unless it is a necessity, I try not to play with Pokemon-ex.  DarkDragonite is enough of a power attacker to get the job done.  Basically I get a great setup and all he has is Rockets Sneasal and Wobbuffet.  I get a Dragonite up and running with 3 Darkness and take out both his Pokemon.

Record 4-0

Round 5 vs. Nick(Hot Mustid) with Dark Crobat/Crobat-ex and DX Weezing
My friend Nick and I are the only undefeateds going into Round 5 so it doesn’t really matter who wins this one we will both make the Top 8 cut.  He just beat the Sally-ex deck that I really wanted to go against.  You would think that my deck has the advantage over Dark Crobat because of resistance with Dragonite and Crobat is weak to Dark Electrode but when both of your Voltorbs are prized and I cant get my combo getting the Darkness energies out in play it was a short game.  Nick’s deck is very interesting because with Dark Crobat he can poison your active then retreat and sacrifice one of his Weezings to place counters on the defending Pokemon without knocking it out but then the Poison damage will do the defending Pokemon in.

Record 4-1

Top 8 Round 1
So I’m second seed and we play best 2 out of 3.

Vs. Heather with Legendary Birds deck with DX Rayquaza-ex
Heather and I and her daughter usually drive out together to events so I was very excited for her to make her very 1st Top 8 at a tournament.  She had a very surprising deck that a lot of players weren’t expecting.  The deck has very fast draw power and can get out of the gates fast and win within the 3 turns.

Game 1 was very uneventful as Heather got her God start and totally demolished me.

Game 2 was very different.  I think that Heather was very surprised and nervous that she actually beat me.  Heather could not get any of her Birds or Rayquaza out and I got a fast set up and won that one.

Game 3 was a longer game but what did her in was the Desert Ruins she had no way to switching out her Ludicolo and the Desert Ruins slowly picked off her ex’s on the bench while I was able to set up and demolish anything that came up.  So I end up winning but congratulating Heather for such a great placing.

Record 5-1

Top 8 Round 2

Vs. Joe M. (FireFighter095reborn)

This was the rematch that Joe has been waiting for all day to beat JohnnyBlaze.

Game 1 – Joe has the advantage all game.  I start with having 2 Voltorbs prized.  So it really slows things down for me. I hang in there but when time is announced that there is only 33 minutes left to finish the next 2 games, I concede and let Joe take Game1.

Game 2 – Much different start.  My Desert Ruins were wreaking havoc on Joe, both of his Stadiums were prized.  I do a desperation move and attach all 4 Darkness early on to get a surprise ko to one of his Zappys with my damaged Draggy. He is able to kill it next turn.  I do get  the 1st 4 prizes.  But slowly Joe made a comeback and won Game 2.  In retrospect I shouldnt have ever attached the 4 Darkness.

So I end up with 3rd place.

Record 5-2
