Kings Li Comics Pokemon Unlimited Tournament - October 13, 2001 Newest Fire/Electric Haymaker 12 participants Burbank, CA I was originally going to organize and run the tournament at Kitty World, but due to the absence of the owner, the event was cancelled. So I decided to make another trip to Burbank to have some fun whooping other people. It was a lot of fun but also more grueling than you think. Okay, there were 2 sessions of tournament that I both did well in, but for my 1st session I just used a Rocket Zappy/ Wiggly to test the waters. So the second session I tried to play something more original. Okay, here's my deck: Newest Fire/Electric Haymaker Pokemon (11): 4x Fossil Magmar 3x Electrabuzz (Base) 2x Cleffa (Eeeeeeek! - Neo Genesis) 1x Gligar 1x Scyther (Jungle Set) Trainers (34): 4x Computer Search 4x Professor Oak 3x Gold Berry 3x Gust of Wind 4x Pluspower 4x Rocket's Sneak Attack 2x Scoop Up 3x Energy Removal 3x Super Energy Removal 2x Nightly Garbage Run 3x Sprout Tower Energies (15): 9x Fire 6x Lightning Credits: to Juan Paredes of the Super Trainer Showdown Qualifier Report - The Rock Show v. 1.0 The main difference was he had 2 Bills and another Energy Removal. I took those out, and placed 2 more Rocket's Sneak Attack and another Pluspower to make it more efficient. Strategy: Beat any deck, including Wigglytuffs, by removing "key" energies away from the opponent's Pokemon. Sprout Tower not only shuts down Wigglytuffs, but also Sneasel and other Special Energy Pokemon's Ecogym, which I had to somehow get rid of. Follow the strategy of a haymaker - keep pressuring the beatdown, annoy the opponent until he or she is frustrated, and finally lose to you. The damage looks little (about 30-40 damage per turn is max), but when the opponent can't get anything out, it is fatal. Deck Report - Round 1: I vs. Andrew The decks has improved quite a bit this time. His deck is no exception. He had a Rocket version of Diglett and Elekid that kept giving me the annoyance. Then he charges up an Umbreon in his Bench. The Digletts and Elekid were knocked out in about 10 turns. That's three prizes. Then Umbreon is in bad shape as I used Super Energy Removal. In a couple of turns, Umbreon is gone as well. Two prizes left. I finished him off easily as his Unown D and Unown N had no chance of knocking out my Pokemon. Win 1-0-0 2pts. Round 2: I vs. Peter He gave me quite a challenge. He had his chances because his Elekid and Sneasel with Recycle Energy got him many heads. I kept using Scoop Up and Gold Berry, and of course Sprout Tower to shut down Sneasel. After some rocking back and forth, I lead by three prizes. I had only one left, he had four. His Neo 3 Suicune knocked my Electrabuzz out by flipping heads for 40 damage. He took a gamble there hoping I don't get a second energy for my Electrabuzz, since I only had 8 cards left. The next card is indeed, a Fire Energy. He lost when I used Thunderpunch. Win 2-0-0 4pts. Round 3: I vs. Demitri He wasn't too hard to beat. He liked his Rocket's Mewtwo as he used Hypnoblast, and I flipped 5 tails in a row. However, I used Scoop Up for my Electrabuzz, and send in my second Electrabuzz, Thunderpunch and I got a tails when I really wanted one, since he had Gold Berry on it. So the next turn, after the he Hypnoblast, I flipped heads. I used a Pluspower to knock it out. After that, the match went downhill and was over quickly. Win 3-0-0 6pts. Now after three rounds, there are three other undefeated players beside myself. They are Jane, Tyler, and Melanie. Here goes the semifinals: Semifinal: I vs. Jane She had a nice deck, but the match itself was a blowout. Again, I removed "key" energies when she really needed it. First one came when the Elekid kept getting many heads, and when she tries to charge up her Scyther with two Energies and a Gold Berry, I burned the first Super Energy Removal. Then after the Elekid can no longer Playful Punch (Knocked Out), I fought against a Neo Electrabuzz. That's when I used a Computer Search for my second Super Energy Removal and burned it. When she got close to retreive her first prize, I used Scoop Up on my Electrabuzz. Then I need to use Fossil Magmar for a while. She kept charging up with Scyther at her Bench. I used the Energy Removal on Grass. When she had almost no hope of winning, she suddenly got a Double Colorless Energy on her Neo Magmar. That's a "key" energy and I used Energy Removal. She is very frustrated and annoyed. I played Sprout Tower the next turn because I saw a Wigglytuff as her attacking force in her earlier matches. Three turns later, she lost. Win 4-0-0 8pts. Final: I vs. Melanie (again!) Her deck was quite difficult to deal with. She used mostly Psychic Pokemon, including a Neo 3 Psychic Lugia. She started with a Sabrina's Abra. She has Sabrina's Kadabra and Sabrina's Alakazam ready to go. I did the same as every match, removing "key energies". However, in this match, I do need to be patient with only Fossil Magmar, and Cleffa. I used Eeeeeeek a couple turns. Then when I needed it, I used Gold Berry, Super Energy Removal on a Psychic and Fighting Energy on Sabrina's Kadabra, and Computer Search for the Professor Oak. Then she used Energy Retreival for two Psychic Energies. So I had to use Energy Removal so she can't use Megaburn from Sabrina's Alakazam. Several turns later, she had Ditto. I used Thunderpunch, she used Thundershock, tails. I retreat my Electrabuzz with 3 damage counters with Cleffa to knock out Ditto. However, she called on the judge for that. Finally, after a lengthy ruling, the ruling was that Ditto was supposed to be knocked out. Then she only had Mr. Mime left. I used Scoop Up on Electrabuzz and attacked with Fossil Magmar. She had no choice but to use Computer Search for Professor Oak, but she then used Bill, and only with a Metal Energy. Thus, I finally knocked it out with Electrabuzz's Thunderpunch. Win 5-0-0 10pts. I won 3 Neo Revelation boosters and a couple bad promo cards. I got a 1st edition Blissey, two non-holo 1st edition Ho-oh. Props and Slops: None for this time because I'm a nice guy.
