Subject: Seattle Worlds Report > Worlds Report > Seattle Convention Center > Saturday 8/3/2002 and Sunday 8/4/2002 > Roughly 300 in attendance > By Johnny Blaze > > > > On Friday I entered the PokeRuins tournament with a fun deck. I used > Alakazam and Light Golduck. Surprisingly it took the whole 30 minutes > for each of the 3 matches. I played Craig Ting (Sentimental Blastoise on > Wizpog) and Freddy K was next. They are both from the U.K. and were > playing exact replicas of Kingdra/Slowking. I went 0-2 by losing on prizes > at the end of time. My final match before playing Sealed was with Eric > Brooks. Eric was also playing a fun deck. He was using Quagsire. We > decided to tie. So my record was 0-2-1 heading into Sealed. We made a 40 > card deck out of 4 LC Boosters. I have no clue what deck I built. Im > pretty sure it was a Mirror deck with Spearow and Dark Wartortle and LC > Wartortle. My 1st opponent was Eric. It was funny Eric drafted the > Alakazam line and made his deck and we battled 1st match. Prior to winning > he conceded as it was time for him to leave. So he gave me the win. He > had 1 prize left and I had 2. My next match was with Kurobatto and I won > that. I also won my final match but forgot who that was. Sorry. My > final record at the Ruins tourney was 3-2-1. I think I came in 11th > place. > > Now off to the Saturday Championship with my son, Nick, in the 10 and > under. During play testing Friday nite at the Crown Plaza he saw a lot of > Water decks mainly Kingdra. So instead of Fire he decides to go with his > Ampharos deck. Remember that for the 10 and under and 11-14 it is best 2 > out of 3 Matches with an 1 Hour time limit. > > Pokemon - 20 > 4 - NG Mareep with static electricity > 3 - NR Flaffy > 4 - NR Ampharos > 4 - Cleffa > 3 - Pichu > 1 - Promo Zapdos > 1 - Caterpie (To counter Electric Resistance) > > Trainers - 23 > 4 - Professor Elm > 3 - Focus Band > 3 - Double Gust > 3 - Pokemon Traders > 3 - Gold Berry > 4 - Bill > 3 - Pokemon Breeder > > Energy - 17 > 16 - Electric > 1 - Darkness (Tech on Caterpie to do 50) > > Saturday 8/3/02 Day One > Round 1 Nick vs. Jose Eguia. > Jose was one of last year's WCSTS Gold medallist at San Diego along with > David Bui. We stand in line with Jose and his parents Jose Sr. and Maria > and their younger daughter all who are nice people right before the event > starts. So we were like oh no they have to play each other 1st round. Go > figure. Jose was using his deck from San Diego which was Dark > Blastoise/Steelix. Nick wins the 1st game very easy with Jose starting > with a lone Squirtle and no draw power. Jose Paralyzes for 10 and then on > Nick's 2nd turn he evolves to Flaffy and k.o.'s the Squirtle. The next > 2 games Jose was able to get out Steelix's with 3-4 Metals and Nick's > Ampharos couldn't withstand the onslaught of Tail Crushes. > Nick lost 1-2. > Record 0-1 > Points - 0. > > > > Round 2 Nick vs. Orion Craig > Orion is the youngest son of Heidi Craig. We hung out with them for most > of the weekend. We rode the Greyline Bus back and forth with them to the > Airport and Hotel. So it figures here is another kid that Nick knows that > he is facing. Orion was playing classic Entei/Magcargo. I guess that > all of Nick's Pichus with Focus Bands cleaned up the mess after his > Ampharos went down. Nick ended up winning the Round 2-0. > Record 1-1 > Points - 3. > > > Round 3 Nick vs. McKaley Beasley(sp) > McKaley was playing Kingdra with NR Raichu. The 1st game Nick won by > beating McKaley due to Weakness. The 2nd game McKaley got 2 NR Raichu's > up fast and beatdown Nick. Im not sure how Nick won the final match but > he did. At one point I noticed the McKaley forgot to put her prizes down > so she was warned for that. She was also playing wicked fast. Please > kids, slow down and think it will save from a lot of mistakes. Nick won > 2-1. > Record 2-1 > Points - 6. > > Round 4 Nick vs. Johnathon H. > Im pretty sure this is Muk007's little brother. He was playing Genetic > Memory Kingdra with 1 of the Neo Genesis Kingdras for the awesome agility > effect. This was one of those feature match-ups. I could tell the way > Nick was playing he was nervous to be in the spotlight. After the jitters > Nick ties the round 1-1 with about 10 minutes left to go. The third game > though Nick only starts with a Mareep and Johnathon wins by benching Nick. > Nick loses 1-2. > Record 2-2. > Points - 6. > > Round 5 Nick vs. Jared Biehl > During the Theme Deck challenge Nick beat Jared's father Larry Biehl and I > played Jared and he ended up winning during the Theme deck challenge. So > both kids beat the parents. I thought that was funny. Anyways for this > match Jared played Dark Blastoise/Steelix and Nick ended up winning 2-0. > I guess Jared did not get Steelix out and running both games and lost due > to Blastoise's weakness. > Record 3-2. > Points - 9. > > At the end of Day 1, Nick ended up in 17th place with a low Opp-Win % of > 49.33. He made the Top 24 and advanced to Day 2. > > Sunday 8/4/02 Day 2 > > Round 6 Nick vs. Tracy Cho > Tracy was playing Typhlosion Fire Recharge with Moltres. Nick ended up > winning the 1st Match with a quickly built Ampharos. After that Nick lost > the remaining 2. Nick lost 1-2. > Record 3-3 > Points - 9. > > Round 7 Nick vs. Ben Sauk > A rematch from the Philly Qualifier when Nick beat Ben in the finals. > This time Ben had the advantage as he was playing his Espeon/Mp Mewtwo > deck. Ben wins the 1st match and Nick ties by winning the 2nd. A 3rd > match is played and Ben's Holo Espeon is too much for Ampharos. Nick > loses 1-2. We later have dinner with Ben and his dad and brother. Really > nice people. > Record 3-4 > Points - 9. > > Round 8 Nick vs. Darian Gonzalez > I remember Darian and his mother from the WCSTS in San Diego. Darian is > playing Riptide Gatr with Parasect. Nick's Lightning Pokemon picked off > the Suicunes easily and Nick ended up winning 2-0. Darian could not get > the combo off to work. > Record 4-4. > Points - 12. > > Nick ended up in 18th place at the end of Day 2. He went on to play in > side events. Wizards ended up having 3 Theme Deck challenge groups as the > turnout was tremendous to sign up for the theme deck challenge. I think > just about everyone that didn ot make Top 8 entered the Theme Deck > challenge. > > My Professor Challenge Report > It was great to meet some of the new Professors I have not met before like > Professor Renee and Professor Mariah, Psycho Dad, Sands, and everyone from > Michigan, Team Raleigh, and everyone else. Also Voltorb 43 who finally > participated in a booster draft. Congrats on your good showing Voltorb. > > Here is my decklist: > Pokemon - 12 > 3 - Rocket Zapdos > 3 - Cleffa > 2 - Igglybuff (Slowking tech) > 2 - Tyrogue (Clefable tech) > 1 - Scyther (Wooper tech) > 1 - Lickitung (Great Staller and MP Mewtwo tech) > > Trainers- 35 > 4 - Professor Oak > 4 - CPU Search > 4 - Energy Removal > 4 - Super Energy Removal > 3 - Lass > 3 - Gold Berry > 3 - Pokemon Tower (Recycle Energy and Item Finder killer) > 2 - Gust of Wind > 2 - Professor Elm (Every get stuck with 3 Oaks in your starting hand?) > 2 - Nightly Garbage Run (Comp. Search Pokemon + Energy and get them right > back) > 2 - Scoop Up (For any Krow locks and works great with Lickitung) > 2 - Trash Exchange (Cant use Item Finder. Trash Exchange is great for > this deck to even get Metals back in) > > Energy- > 10 - Lightning > 2 - Metal > 1 - DCE (For retreat or a second turn powered Scyther) > > Basically the strategy is to beat down with a Metal Zapdos while killing > all the opponents energy with a 4-4 line of removals. Pokemon Tower > further depletes their Recycle energies. The Igglybuffs proved crucial as > I played against 3 different Slowking decks. > > Round 1 - Johnny vs. Scott Kushkel(sp) > I know Scott and his son Nick from some Boston events that we have gone > to. In fact at the last Boston Qualifier Scott and I played in the finals > in the 15+. His son Nick made the Top 8 at the Seattle Grinders to earn a > spot to compete. So that was cool. Scott was playing Steel Chansey, > Unown N, and Slowking. My Igglybuffs shut down his Mind Games so he could > never get a fully pumped Chansey. Needless to say I Electroburned him to > death. I took all 6 prizes. > Record 1-0 > Points - 3 > > Round 2 - Johnny vs. Roy Roberson > Roy was another familiar face that I battled and Roy also had a very > similar deck to Scott's. Instead for the fact that Roy used Blissey with > Hyper Devolution Spray. Simmlar to the 1st round my Igglys shut off Roy's > Slowkings and I was able to virtually deplete his whole deck of energies. > Blissey was annoying because everytime I was about to k.o. Chansey, Roy > would evolve then flip Heads on Blissey's power to remove 80 damage. Once > his Hyper Devo sprays ran out I was able to take my last prize with only 1 > card remaining in my deck. Close call. > Record 2-0 > Points- 6 > > Round 3 - Johnny vs. Steve P. > I know Steve P. from the Wizpog boards. Steve is from Colorado and I have > also seen him at other events. I would have to give the original deck > award to Steve out of all the opponents that I played during the course of > this 2 day Professor event. Steve was using a Kindle/Blaine's Charizard > deck. It was nice to face a deck without Chansey or Slowking. All I > remember by like Turn 3 I had a Metal Zapdos going and it k.o.'d all 3 of > his Blaine's Charmanders before they could evolve to Blaine's Charizard. > Record 3-0 > Points- 9 > > Round 4 - Johnny vs. Frank > Frank is from Canada and before we started Frank was like I have never > done this well before in such a large scale tourney. He said that he was > a little nervous. I tried to make our game friendly and easygoing. Frank > was playing Slowking with Sneasal. Frank got up 2 different Sneasals > before I could find my Igglys. Once I got 2 Igglys out he was flipping > for 1 trainer at since he had 3 Slowkings out. I was able to Super all of > his Sneasals and he was in a crunch. His Energy Charges were not working > and he just played too fast and wound up decking himself. > Record 4-0 > Points -12 > > This concludes the Day 1 of the Professor tourney. I feel real good about > my chances as I am in 3rd place out of 90 Professors after Day 1. Just > Heidi Craig and Alex Brusseau are in front of me. I know I will most > likely face Heidi. She says no that she will probably face Alex. We shall > see tomorrow nite. > > Day 2 Professors Tourney > Round 5 - Johnny vs. Heidi > Guess who's right? I face off with Heidi. This is cute because my son > was matched up with her son in the 10 and under and now I am playing the > mom. Heidi is a real cool person. We are running almost duplicate decks > except for the fact that she plays sprout Tower instead of Pokemon Tower. > This would be her undoing because she also plays with Recycle Energies. > The game goes about 20 minutes before the 1st prize is taken by me. We > are energy removaling back and forth. She nor I can get a Rocket's Zapdos > in play. I finally Comp. Search for a Rocket Zapdos and this proves to be > the winning factor. I flip 2 heads on one of her babies to kill it. She > finally gets her own Zapdos up and running and cancels out my Tower with > Sprout. She is able to use Item Finder to get her SER back and removes my > Zapdos 2 Lightning and the 1 Metal remains. I top deck a Lightning and I > am back in business. We both take prizes but that 1st prize I take is the > deciding factor. When time is called I am ahead with only one prize > remaining to her 2. I won. > Record 5-0 > Points - 14 > > Round 6 - Johnny vs. Alex Brusseau > This is so funny before Alex comes to his seat, Jason K. is playing at the > table next to me. Jason K. and Alex both traveled together with Alex's > father. Jason is like you know you are going up against a great player. > He won like this and that and so on and so forth. So we were like going > back and forth jestfully. So Alex comes and we start to play. Alex is > running straight Chansey, Unown N, Scyther with no Slowking. He runs > Igglys also. He plays with Removals. At one point I am set to win on > 2nd turn by Rogueing him but fail on the baby flip. He Oaks to get more > basics. We removal back and forth all game. He finally sets up a Metal > Chansey and I cant find the rest of my removals. He takes like 5 prizes > straight. I finally remove his Chansey and won of his Energy Charges work > to get back 2 DCE's. I was able to make a comeback killing off all his > babies with a powered Metal Zapdos. The prize count is now 2-1. Time is > called and it is my turn to finish. I use a Trash Exchange to try and get > a Gust of Wind back in my deck. I didn't but since it is my last turn I > Oak the remaining 6 cards left in my deck. Alex wins on prizes by a very > close one. > Record 5-1 > Points - 14 > > Round 7 - Johnny vs. Dakota W. > This is the final round and I need this win to place in the Top 8. I know > it is going to be tough because Dakota is playing Clefable. He gets to go > 1st and I start with a lone Zapdos with God drawing power. He starts with > Cleffa. He Comp. Searches for a Clefairy and Lass's me and then Eeeeeeks. > Oh nooo. There goes my shot. Unless I topdeck something that will help > me then it is game. I don't and he evolves into Clefable and then > Metronomes and Electroburns me for game. > Record 5-2 > Points - 14 > > Props to the kid Friday nite during the Ruins tournament that said "Those > (deck sleeves) are Bling, Bling." Eric and I laughed so hard. > Props to Wizards for holding such a great event. > Props to all the Professors who volunteered and things ran so smoothly. > Props to Kris Alvarez for a cool Poke Ruins tourney Fri. nite. > > Slops to the 2 out of 3 format. It would have been Props if the person > who was ahead on prizes when time was called won that match. > > Thanks for reading. Any questions or comments email me at > AN7710@dfa.state.ny.us > >
