FREEZELock: The Saga Continues...
Deck Type: Combo
March 21, 2001

Heya all!

More good ideas on Bill's FREEZELock deck from 3/7/01 came in, and I wanted to share them with you.  Miguel delves into Neo2 Umbreon as an alternative to Murkrow, plus has a couple more ideas worth considering...

I really like the idea of that Bill has. Its cool to
see original decks rather than variations of the same
deck you see at each mechanics page. I have friends
who play the typical Chan haymaker or Wiggly deck. I
have managed to make 2 decks (with the few cards I
have) that were completely original. While they may
have not won all the time, they were fun to play and
were ORIGINAL. Way to go, Bill. ORIGINALITY MUST
RULE!! (That's right, John!) *Inside joke, Doll. =) * *grin*

Dude, YOU reek of awesomeness!

FIRST OF ALL, DOLL, I NEED TO KNOW SOMETHING. IS
SLOWKING'S POWER STACKABLE? As in, if my opponent
plays a Gust of Wind, and I have 2 Slowkings on my
bench, do I get to flip 2 coins to stop my opponent
from using it? Or is it only one of them can be used?
Or is it something that one of them can only be used
to stop 1 trainer each per turn? My friend John was
saying its not allowed to be used twice (the power).
Please clear this up please!!! Thanx!!!

Oh yeah, Slowking's Pokemon Power is stackable... your opponent must flip for *each* Slowking you have on the bench... very nasty!  *evil laugh*

Well, I like the idea of knocking out the bench.
That's why Dark Raichu is one of my favorite (and most
feared) guys. Well, I thought of a few things that
could really help Bill with his deck. Neo 2 has some
cards that totally reek of awesomeness, namely Eevee
and Umbreon. Here's how they work.

First, get Eevee (Neo 2) on the bench with Piloswine
ready to freeze the opponents Pokémon. Put the Dark
energy on him and use his Pokémon power. The power
states that whenever you put an energy type of Eevee,
search for that Eevee's evolution. (Ex. Fire energy=
Flareon) Go and get your Umbreon. Here's a quick run
of Umbreon:

80 hp

For 2 colorless: Bite-20 Damage

For 2 Dark and a colorless: Faint Attack
Choose one of your opponents Pokémon. This attack does
30 damage to that Pokémon. Ignore weakness and
resistance, trainers on that Pokémon (Defender, as far
as I know of), Pokémon Powers, or *Baby Rules. (With 2
Dark energies, that's 50 damage!!!!)

1 retreat
Resistant to Psychic

*DOLL, PLEASE CHECK INTO THIS CARD PLEASE!!! MY FRIEND
LIKES TO KNOCK OFF BABIES WITH THIS GUY AND HE SAYS IT
GETS AROUND THAT RULE SINCE HE'S ACTIVE. I THINK HE
MIGHT BE RIGHT, BUT I WANT TO BE SURE. THANX.

Okay, you get into weirdness here when you try to translate from Japanese to English.  Unfortunately, until Wizards actually releases the card in English, we can only use our best guess, and that sometimes turns out to be dead wrong (Remember Lugia?  Before Wizards released Neo Genesis, everyone thought that you only had to discard ONE energy to do its massive attack... kids, can you say BROKEN!?!  But instead, when the English version was released, the correct translation made you discard 3 (one of each color), and so Lugia was retired to the pile of other useless and, for all practical purposes, unplayable glorified cardboard) . But since we have nothing else to go on yet, let's assume that the translation noted above is correct.  In that case, it would certainly appear that Umbreon gets around the baby flipping rule.

Ya see where I'm going with this? With Umbreon, you
can do 50 damage instead of 30 with Murkrow! Plus, if
u can get 3 Darks on him, that's 60! Hurt Wiggly on
the bench with Murkrow, retreat, then Max out on
Umbreon and tell Wiggly to taste the sweet smell of a
severe @$$ whuppin'!!! (I hate Wiggly w/ a passion...)  ~ Die! foul demon Wiggly!!!

Okay, I can see where Umbreon can do some severe beatings, Rock Bottom style, but only to the active if you are counting Darkness Energy damage.  So he's only doing 30 to the bench too, and now the opponent's active can attack since Murkrow has been benched, so you kind of unlock part of the combo.  So really, it's a trade off... "I hit you harder, but I'm also more vulnerable..."  That's not necessarily a bad thing... definitely a quicker deck in some ways..  Maybe if you could protect Umbreon with Gold Berry.  I think playtesting would be in order to prove which idea would be more effective, but it appears it's better to keep the active locked in with Murkrow.

And with freeze going on, the opponent is pretty much
scarred.

Also, some other cards that might be useful for Bill.
First, Energy flow can get precious Dark or Rainbow
energy off a hurting Murkrow and put it back in your
hand.

Okay, that's a good idea if you can find the space, especially if you don't run Ecogym...

Also, if u are having problems with Slowking not
attacking, you can test out how a Noctowl will work.
They are both stage 1's, but while Noctowl may have
only 60 hp, he does have free retreat. The two both
have close to the same type of powers; Noctowl's tries
to get trainers out of the hand while Slowking tries
to stop them on the spot. It's all on your preference.
And he's colorless, so he can attack as a last resort.
Just beware of Sprout Tower!

I think the choice between Slowking and Noctowl would have to be determined by the area metagame.  Noctowl is the weaker of the two in combo (Slowking puts the trainers back on the top of their deck, locking the opponent out of drawing energy and other useful cards and into drawing Trainers handicapped by Slowking's PP).  But if you find your opponents are running lots of Gust and you often find yourself short a Switch, you may consider the 'Owl as an alternative.  Then again, you have to also remember Noct's weakness is Electric... if you battle in an area with lots of Electabuzz and Rocket Zapdos running around, there's gonna be fried owl for dinner.... ;)

Well, I'm done hear. Thanks for hearing me out Doll.  You're welcome =)  Thanks for your contribution!
Good luck with the deck Bill.

Peace

Miguel

P.S.: Doll, I have 2 decks that I would like for you
to fix up, please. One of them has a Blastoise in it,
so I'm not sure if that'll put it into the Archetype
category. The 2nd has a Slowking theme going too, but
focuses more on confusion. The deck does have some
potential, but needs to work out some kinks in it.
Thanx again! You reek of awesomeness!!!

Decks can run Blasty and other "archetypical" Pokémon, as long the deck itself isn't archetypical.  Go for it!
