...wait a sec.

Aren't you from...the Pokemon TCG on the GameBoy Color?

Yeah...you were that guy...who danced with the weird music. And had that Trainer card that Confused your own Poke-ohhhhhhhhhh...

Well, for anyone not in the know, Imakuni? is a reference to the Japanese musician of the same name who has in the past made music for the Pokemon anime. He actually appears prominently in the aforementioned Pokemon TCG video game, where he gives out a lot of packs upon being defeated or his own personal card after every four defeats, as well as having some influence on the design of Pokemon Ranger. Needless to say, this guy gets around!

So it's only natural really that he's got his own Pokemon card...I guess. Actually, he's got several of them, but no one in America's gonna know about them cause they're all printed in Japanese! Course they're a bunch of fun silly cards that aren't really meant to be taken seriously - you've got one that says, "Throw this card away, cause he's running away!" and another that wants both players to play with their mouths as wide as possible. It's shenanigans, plain and simple.

So it's nice to see they finally gave the English-speaking folk a card of their own. What does he do? Well true to the video game from before, it Confuses your Active Pokemon...THIS IS THE GREATEST SUPPORTER EVER EVERYONE NEEDS TO RUN IT AT 4 PLAY IT PLAY IT PLAY IT!!!

Rating

Standard: 1/5 (WHY WON'T YOU PLAY THIS CARD IT'S SO GOOD)

Expanded: 1/5 (COME ON, YOU COULD DO SO MUCH WITH CONFUSING YOUR OWN POKEMON)

Limited: 1/5 (LIKE REALLY, WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE?!)

Arora Notealus: Have a happy and safe April Fool's Day, guys!

Weekend Thought: Enjoyed the cards from this week? I'll bet! Can you work around these cards and their effects? Perhaps you can! Or if not, well, I'm sure there's something more you can do with some of these guys.

Otaku

Imakuni? (Generations 63/83) is a Public Service Announcement kind of review.  It also seemed suitable for April Fool’s Day so here we go.  Long time or returning older players actually might have a clue who or what this is, but many will not.  So to get the formalities out of the way, this is a Supporter meaning it faces steep competition as Supporters take on a once-per-turn restriction to justify amazingly potent effects when compared to Items.  Imakuni? Confuses your Active Pokémon.  Your Active, not your opponent’s.  Personally I had hoped that while they were updating the card, they would have had it Confuse all Active Pokémon because if there is one thing Imakuni? tends to do to most of us, at least outside of Japan, it is cause confusion.

You see, Imakuni? is not a new card, not entirely.  It was never officially released outside of Japan but was included in the Pokémon Trading Card Game video game (originally for the Game Boy Color later on the 3DS as a Virtual Console title).  Since this predated Supporters, he was a bit less useless because he was a “normal” Trainer, which is what Items were before we had the term “Item”.  Who is he though?  In short he’s a character portrayed by singer/comedian Tomoaki Imakuni for Pokémon in Japan; yet another mascot for the franchise.  Most of his work appears to be for Pokémon specifically or GameFreak in general.  The virtual card he had in the Game Boy Color game mentions he wants to be played as a Pokémon but since he is not one he can’t and that is why the Active is Confused.  Imakuni has a series of spoof cards that were not released outside of Japan.  All were meant to be funny and some were not even legal for Organized Play.

Technically there are times when Imakuni? could prove useful, just not more so than a different card.  For example, Machamp-EX could use it as an emergency fallback for when Abilities are down and thus Ariados (XY: Ancient Origins 6/98) can’t do its thing and Poison both Active Pokémon, but you are probably better off just running a different attacker or using “Crazy Hammer” without the damage bonus, as Confusion means your attack has a 50% chance of just placing three damage counters on your attacking Pokémon instead of its usual damage/effects.  Likewise Confusion overwrites Sleep and Paralysis, but even just sticking to Supporters you could use Pokémon Center Lady (so hard not to call this card Pokémon Nurse) to remove all Special Conditions and heal 60 damage.  As another card from Generations Imakuni? should be difficult to use in Limited, because the Limited format is where you build decks with brand new, unopened boosters (sometimes other product).  Usually this means a Pre-Release but Generations isn’t doing that.  If you do manage it, I suppose the emergency use of Imakuni? to deal with Paralysis and Sleep might be worth including it, if you have an extra slot (and being Limited, you just might).

Summary: Imakuni? is a card for fun decks and collecting, not serious play.  He is kind of awesome like that.  I probably should have just given him a flat one out of five for both constructed formats, but since he technically has a place where he could be used, I’ll give him a 20th of a point bonus (remember, one out of five is the lowest on our scale).  Enjoy him for what he is, or if you are amazing/desperate use him to literally confuse your opponent in organized play. ;)
