Gurdurr (XY)

Today we look at an evolving Stage 1 from the XY set. With this type of Pokémon, there are really two questions you have to answer: is the Stage 2 worth using, and does the Stage 1 help it in any way?

Well, the Stage 2 is Conkeldurr, and neither the PLS nor the XY version that we looked at last week have that much to offer. The XY one has a nice low cost attack, but nothing to really persuade you to suffer the inconvenience of running an evolution. But supposing you really want to try it, or maybe somewhere down the line we get a good Conkeldurr: is it worth using this Gurdurr as opposed to skipping the Stage 1 entirely with the help of Rare Candy?

In a word, no. With 90 HP and two unimpressive attacks, the only reason why you would include this card in a Conkeldurr deck is because you feared Item Lock (Trevenant XY and Dragonite PLF, I guess) enough to want a hedge against it or because it offered another route to the Stage 2 if you ran out of Candy or wanted to use it for something else.

This Gurdurr is sadly typical of its kind: it’s not a strong Pokémon, it doesn’t assist its evolution in any way, and it doesn’t bring anything different to the table. You would only run it because you felt you had to, never because you wanted it.

Modified: 1.25 (another anonymous Stage 1)

Limited: 2 (barely mediocre)

Gurdurr.
Unlimited 150 review.

Today’s Pokémon up for review is Gurdurr, quite an unremarkable not-fully-evolved Pokémon. It has decent HP and ok attacks, so in the case you can’t get it evolved it can actually put up a fight… but it doesn’t do anything special and doesn’t synergise particularly well with its final Stage.

Hammer Arm does an ok 60 for 3, enough to KO most starters and can 2 hit KO a great deal of playable Pokémon. The added effect of discarding the top card of the opponent’s deck can be seen as a bonus to an already decent attack but it will rarely make a big difference in a deck that doesn’t focus on milling.

Rating: 2.5 (An ok card for a not-fully-evolved, just don’t try to play it without Conkeldurr in your deck!)
