Abomasnow (Plasma Blast)

Here’s something a bit different: a card that has Energy requirements that are completely different from the card Type: Abomasnow is a Water Pokémon that needs Grass Energy to attack. Clearly an attempt to reflect the Pokémon’s Grass/Ice Typing in the video games.

So, useful off-Type attacker for Grass decks, or useless gimmick? Sadly, the latter. Abomasnow has decent HP for a Stage 1 (120) and a nice Weakness to Metal, but the attacks are way below par. Razor Leaf demands two Grass Energy for a mere 40 points of effect-free damage while Bang Heads adds another Energy to the cost, but still comes up short by only doing 80. It also has the weird effect of leaving both Abomasnow and the Defending Pokémon Confused which will probably hurt you more than your opponent thanks to that retreat cost of two.

I suppose Abomasnow is most likely to feature in decks that run Virizion EX which will protect him from the Status Condition, but even so the attack is pretty underwhelming when you consider the cost and effort of getting him into play. The card is much more curiosity than contender.

Modified: 2 (being strange isn’t enough)

Limited: 2.5 (fairly solid but nothing special)
