Blastoise (Plasma Blast)

Yep, this is the same Blastoise we got in Boundaries Crossed and as a shiny version in Plasma Storm, only with different artwork. In other words, this is the third time we have seen this immensely powerful card in less than a year, oh and it’s available in a theme deck too. By now, no-one should have any problems getting hold of a few copies.

Blastoise is a great card because its Deluge Ability allows you to break one of the game’s fundamental rules (one Energy attachment per turn) not just once, but as many times as you can (or want to). It has great synergy with Energy Retrieval and Super Energy Retrieval which can ensure a constant supply of Energy in the hand to use with Deluge. Most important of all, it has fantastic attacking Pokémon which make the most of the insane Ability: with Blastoise support Black Kyurem EX can OHKO every Pokémon in the game, turn after turn, while Keldeo EX and Mewtwo EX can have their damage output racked up to ridiculous levels. In fact, pretty much anything that needs a lot of Water and/or Colourless Energy can benefit from Blastoise.

This card does have a somewhat decent attack in Hydro Pump, which can be used when necessary to deal with pesky Safeguard Pokémon, but it’s overwhelmingly a support Pokémon, dependent on having good partners for its playability (remember how little impact the very similar Feraligatr Prime made?). As long as they exist, then you should continue to see Blastoise decks appearing regularly in the top cut of major tournaments.

Rating

Modified: 4.5 (the Ability just begs to be abused)

Limited: 3.5 (could do work on its own here)
