Ponyta Lv 8

So, what does Delibird bring us for our last pre-Christmas review? Oh look! It’s Ponyta!

The first thing people will notice about Ponyta is that it has an Ascension attack. These are almost always great (remember CG Shuppet?) as they allow you to search out a Rapidash and evolve straight away. How great that is obviously depends on whether there are any playable Rapidash and the news on that front isn’t so good. The only serious candidate is Rapidash SV with the Wild Guard PokeBody (kind of like a poor man’s Mewtwo LV X).

Ponyta’s second attack is made irrelevant by the first seeing as you will want to evolve it asap. That’s just as well, really, as Combustion is both weak and overpriced at [R][C] for 20 damage and no Effect. Ponyta’s +10 Water Weakness is pretty much what you would expect, but its frighteningly low 40 HP is a different matter. You certainly wouldn’t want to start with this. Retreat cost of one is ok, but it gets Free Retreat when evolved anyway.

Basically, if you are going to play Rapidash, Ascension probably makes this the Ponyta of choice. The fact that it is such a weak Basic will probably give you a few nervous moments though.

And with that, all that’s left is for me to wish all CotD readers a Happy Christmas, and New Year!

Rating

Modified: 2 (if you must play Rapidash, use this)

Limited: 3.25 (Rapidash is decent in Limited and searching one out with Ascension is great)

Guy

Ponyta

THIS is a good Ponyta. If you are going to run any Rapadash (and most likely the Arceus version that is unaffected by SP unless Dialga G lv. X is out) you must run this Ponyta. Its stats are shabby, but who cares, it is played for its first attack, Ascention. For one energy of any type, Ascention allows you to search your deck for a card that evolves from Ponyta and put it on Ponyta. Basically, you get your Rapidash out turn one if you start with Ponyta, which is nice against an SP deck as it well let you stall for a few turns. But there are better ways to stall against an SP deck like using SPiritomb from Arcues or Mr. Mime MT. Anyway, if you play with a Rapidash, you should also play with this Ponyta.

Modified: I'll give it a 2.75/5 for its ability to grab the Rapidash
Limited: 3/5

BoDragon

Ponyta (Platinum--Arceus, #46)

Ascension, Ponyta's first attack for [C], is its crown jewel. It allows the player to search his or her deck for Rapidash, and evolve it from Ponyta as the effect of the attack. Rapidash will be out ready in play on the player's next turn.

Combustion, its second attack dealing 20 damage for [RC], deals light damage to hit the opposing Pokémon. The attack cost is high for inflicting low damage.

Its retreat cost [C] and weakness [W] +10 are typical for a low level basic Fire-type Pokémon.

Limited: 3/5
Ascencion is Ponyta's strongest search option to get Rapidash from the deck.

Modified: 1/5
Ponyta's low HP and other options to the Ascension attack to bring Rapidash into play makes it a benchwarmer.
