Altaria

Modified - Altaria's 1st attack is too risky. Cotton Cloud is pretty good, especially against Gallade, since you'll prevent 30 + 20 more for resistance. But it's not like Gardevoir should have much trouble killing Altaria. Altaria's low HP and weak attacks make him a bad choice in modified. 1/5

Limited - Do 60 damage and prevent 30 with all colorless energy?! Altaria could stay alive for a LONG time. 4/5

(03/03/08) - Altaria Lv. 42

Hey everyone, welcome to a new week! Last weekend was the first of two weekends of State Championships. Although a few new decks surfaced, there seemed to be a lot of Magmortars and Gardellades in the top cuts. Hopefully this weekend I will be able to go to a tourney to show off my newly created deck. Perhaps this week I will display it here? Nonetheless, today we have the new Altaria.

Name: Altaria Lv. 42
Set: Great Encounters
Rarity: Rare

Analysis: Let's see... To start, 80 HP for a Stage 1 is not good and neither is the +20 weakness to colorless. Resistance to fighting is great. Dragonbreath is risky, but really cheap for the possibilities. Cotton Cloud is great. Let's face it, almost all decks today utilize evolved Pokemon.

Although it would have trouble against the new Basic Lv. X Pokemon, Altaria has the possibility of being a great Turn 2/3 deck. Good damage plus protection will make up for the lack of HP. Protecting yourself by 30 damage each turn while still doing 50-60 damage is pretty annoying for the opponent and good for you.

Modified: Can be pretty decent. Guarding itself by 50 damage (resistance) from Gallade is great. Low HP, however, leaves it Gardevoir Lv. X bait. (3/5)

Limited: Really, really good here. Good damage and good protection from other evolved Pokemon. Take it!

And it's colorless! (5/5)

Hey there all of you pokemon fans, I hope you all had fun at states (Or will have fun if they haven’t come yet where you are…) Today’s COTD is Altaria, this card looks horrible, but once you looks at it closely you can tell that it is decent when used right. 40 and paralyze for (C) is amazing, only problem is the coin flip… Cotton cloud is almost good enough to play, 60 plus 30 reduced damage from all stage 2’s during your opponents turn is great! It makes any GG player have to flip 3 prizes to OHKO Altaria (With the help of resistance,) but you’d have to attack first… and for (C)(C)(C) it isn’t good enough to see very much play.

Pros –
40 + Paralyze is nice
3 prize flip for GG

Cons –
Coin flips are evil!
Needs 20 more HP
The second attack isn’t worth it

Modified – Nope, GG will still eat you up, it does nothing Vs. Magmortar either. 2.25/5

Limited – all (C) requirements means it fits anywhere! 3.75/5

To whoever makes pokemon cards: Keep Altaria where she is supposed to be, on the bench!

I honestly don’t think this will see a lot of play. Its dragon breath attack is deadly IF it hits and cotton cloud is only mediocre. Combined with only 80 HP and a typing rarely getting any weakness damadge in I do not see the point.

For people going out of their way to counter gallade it may be interesting cotton cloud+ resistence makes it necessary for gallade to hit VERY hard something that it will have a realle hard time doing more than once or twice.

In limited its potentially game winning dragonbreath combined with downright mean cotton cloud makes it a winner though.

Altaria

Modified: Not too bad for a Stage 1 but it’s a luck-based card. You have to flip
heads to attack. The second attack isn’t that great either. Sure it can do 60 and block 30 from Evolved Pokemon but it only has 80 HP. Resistance to Fighting is nice though With all that Gallade Decks around.

Rating : 2/5

Limited: This is were it’s used for. In Limited. Good HP, decent Attacks, 1 Retreat.

Rating : 3/5
