HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Sorry about burning the caps for a moment but… I hope you have all had a grand holiday season! (I know I have.) Alright, onto the COTD! Today’s COTD is the stage one to the only non-attack mass energy accelerator pokemon out right now (May change with DP4 GE and Togekiss.) But the card isn’t Blastoise and I’ll keep it like that. =P The HP is decent for an evolving stage one, and the retreat cost is livable. The attacks aren’t too good but 50 for a boost or 40 for 2 (w) is decent. Not much else to say, use it if you use Blastoise, don’t if you don’t.

Pros –
Only 1 retreat cost
50 for a boost isn’t bad

Cons –
Needs to evolve
Rare candy > Stage 1 pokemon

Unlimited – stage 2’s here? Forget about it. 1/5

Modified – use it only with Blastoise. 3/5

Limited – same as above, but can do OK w/out Blastoise because of shell attack. 3.75/5

WOOT! ANOTHER YEAR OF COTD’S IS COMIN!

“An optimist stays up to see the New Year in. A pessimist waits to make sure the old one leaves.”
Arbok14 Hey all, I'm finally back for my second review. Today we have Wartortle, which evolves from Squirtle and into Blastoise.
----------------------------------------

Name: Squirtle
Set: Secret Wonders
Rarity: Uncommon

Overview: Wartortle is a Stage 1 water-type, which evolves from Squirtle and into Blastoise. It has 80 HP, +20 Weakness to lightning, no Resistance, and a Retreat Cost of 1. Its first attack, 'Giant Wave,' has an energy cost of WW and does 40 damage, but it can't be used on the next turn. Its second, 'Shell Attack,' does 50 damage for a CCC energy cost.

Analysis: 80 HP for a Stage 1 that still has to evolve is pretty good. It's water-type is nice, because it has the advantage against the seemingly declining Infernapes and the increasingly popular Magmortars/Typhlosions. The weakness to lightning isn't bad either, because I have not really faced or even seen any electric decks, though I played Ampharos myself. The attacks don't jump out, because they basically only do damage. Shell Attack is good solely because it doesn't require specific energy. This Wartortle should really only be used with Blastoise or as a tech if fire-types are popular in your area.

Ratings:

Unlimited: A decent choice for using with Blastoise. But use ONLY with Blastoise! (1/5)

Modified: The best choice to use with Blastoise, but the Blastoises in this format disappoint me. Maybe use as a tech? (2/5)

Limited: Wartortle is pretty good here, not needing specific energy to attack (Squirtle doesn't either). 80 HP and an energy-nonspecific attack for 50 is nice. (3/5)

This counts for all preevos: its very rare that the preevos matters to wheter you want to play a deck or not especially the middle stages rarely does anything. The exeptions are exceptional good set up attacks like call for family and signs of evolution.

That said when you decided to play the stage 2 you may aswell choose the best possible  understages.

Watortle is not that bad 1 retreat ok good. Its first attack makes its possible to to KO a 50 base poke at turn 2.

80 Hp is ok but nothing special
