I had to ask Robert Gutschera at WOTC about this one a long time ago. Here is the OFFICIAL ruling: Clefairy must have the extra WATER energy attached to CLEFAIRY in order for Metronome to do more than base damage. He explained it as if Clefairy had Hydro Pump written on its card instead of Metronome... The ONLY "loophole" with Metronome are attacks that make you discard energy. Beyond this one little change, all other attack moves are copied word-for-word (replacing "Clefairy" for "Poliwrath" etc...) Brian Brokaw
