You were correct on both accounts (and your friend was not).

1) Super Energy Removal removes 2 energy CARDS. (Double Colorless Energy
counts as 1 energy CARD, so you get to choose another card as well.)

2) Retreat Cost is paid in ENERGY (not energy CARDS). So a Retreat Cost
of 2 ENERGY can be paid with a single Double Colorless Energy card.
