When a Pokemon's attack applies a lingering "effect" like Smokescreen, this "effect" will reside with either: a) The attacker b) The defender c) Both. To know which it is, look at the attack text. Since Smokescreen ONLY references the "Defender" (and mentions NOTHING about the attacker), then you know that Smokescreen's "effect" is stuck to the Defending Pokemon. So, benching or fainting the Attacking Pokemon (who inflicted Smokescreen onto the Defender) will NOT remove the Smokescreen "effect". Brian Brokaw
