What if a clefairy doll is put out as a starter and the other player sends out
mesterious fossil. It says that they can't retreat. Would that end the game?

They also say:
"At any time during your turn before your attack, you
may discard Mysterious Fossil / Clefairy Doll from play."

So, there is always a way to get rid of them...
