I am trying to just understand the basic concepts. Would you please >answer a few question? Hi Nancy. This is Brian Brokaw. I'll do my best to answer your questions. >1. What is the difference between the basic set and the jungle set? Basic Set was released in January of 1999 and includes 102 unique cards. Jungle Expansion was released in June of 1999 and includes 64 unique cards. All total that is 166 unique cards to collect, but you should keep seperate lists, as Basic Set cards can only be found in Basic set boosters, and Jungle Expansion cards can only be found in Jungle Exp. boosters. >2. Are they different cards? Yes. None of the Jungle cards match the Basic set cards, or vice versa. However, if you purchase "pre-constructed" decks (sometimes called "theme" decks), these may include cards from just one, or both sets, plus include multiple copies of individual cards. >3. How do you know if you have the first edition card? There will be a stamp on the card that says "Edition 1". It is small, round and black. Wizards official site has a picture: http://www.wizards.com/Pokemon/collectemall.asp >4. What is a Topps? Is it a Pokemon card or a fake one? Topps is another company getting in on the Pokemon craze. They have a set of collectible trading cards as well, but these cards are NOT compatible with the Wizards of the Coast cards. (the Wizards cards are meant to be a GAME! The Topps cards are only collectible... no game intended or included.) They are genuine Pokemon cards, and something MORE to collect. (of course, with this craze--and TRUST me here--you must be selective about what you pursue... you will go crazy trying to "catch 'em all!" ;-) >5. How many editions of cards are there? This is rather confusing, but I will try to clarify: a) LIMITED print Basic Set (commonly referred to as "1st Edition" Basic set) b) UNLIMITED print Basic Set (many times incorrectly referred to as "2nd Edition" Basic set) c) LIMITED print Jungle Expansion (commonly referred to as "1st Edition" Jungle set) d) UNLIMITED print Jungle Expansion (again, incorrectly referred to as "2nd Edition" Jungle set) e) Promotional "Promo" cards (usually with special marks to identify them as unique) The "LIMITED" print run cards were available FIRST. if you were lucky enough to buy your boosters when the new sets were available, they were probably all "LIMITED" print cards. Basic Set LIMITED lasted about a month. Jungle Expansion LIMITED lasted about a week at major retail outlets. Although both are still available at HIGHLY inflated prices in random places. >6. Exactly, how many cards are there? My daughter says 160. I found a list >of 102. You have a list of the Basic Set. You need a list for the Jungle Expansion.
