Hunter Owl

Those who know my previous reviews know I'm not a big fan of effects that boost ATK scores, as usually if you're playing a low ATK monster with hopes of boosting it up, you could be doing better with a big monster in the first place.

In order to get this guy to a respectable ATK, you need to have 2 other Wind monsters on the field AND this guy. Not going to happen very often in competitive Yu-Gi-Oh. It's true that your opponent will have to attack other monsters if they don't have removal effects to clear out what you have, but that will lower your Hunter Owl's ATK score back to where it was, and you'll have to summon other Wind monsters to get it back up. Additionally, Torrential Tribute and Mirror Force can (and probably will) still wreck your day. Those may be only 2 cards out of a deck of 40, but they're 2 cards that just about EVERYONE plays.

Sorry, don't see any major use for this.

Tuesday

Well, since the Big Giant Head, aka Pojo has returned, so has Card of the Day, starting off this week on a lovely Tuesday. We open the week by looking at Hunter Owl, one of the G/X pack cards.

Hunter Owl is Level 4 with only 1000 attack points and an equally low 900 defense points, both are pretty low for a monster of its Level.
However, Winged Beast friend gains 500 attack for each Wind monster you control, and I believe that counts the Owl itself, giving you an instant 1500 attack.

If you had two Hunter Owls on the field, you would have two monsters with 2000 attack (still assuming it powers itself) with a Maruading Captain type lock. If you control another Wind monster, your opponent cannot attack Hunter Owl, or the other one if you had two...

Imagine if you had three, that's three four star monsters with 2500 attack that can't be attacked, and even if one was destroyed, the other two still can't be attacked.

Hunter Owl :
Hello people! I'm not dead! Just burdened with tests...

A return to an old style of card for Yugioh, ones that give ATK bonuses for sharing elements on your board.
Generally, effects that merely give an ATK boost aren't worth it, and here isn't much of an exception.
However, a 2000+ATK that your opponent can't attack the first time around isn't actually that bad. Slowly they produce cards that mean eventually a type-specific deck will be rather good.

Video Game Promos tend to be hit and miss as far as playability goes, and this card just happened to come out at the right time.

You may have heard abouta Wind Monarch coming out in the upcoming Force of the Breaker booster set. You may also have heard of support for the Harpie sub-type, in the way of Harpie Queen. All of this points to the possibility of a competitive Harpie / WIND Deck, in which Hunter Owl fits nicely.

While not a splashable monster, Hunter will fit right in with Harpies as it's effect abuses the WIND attribute, and since it's a Winged Beast, it's a perfect tribute for Icarus Attack.

If you have a copy or two of this little guy, give him a whirl.

Well, after a little break from CotD’s, we are back….

HUNTER OWL
Wind/Winged-Beast/4/1000/900
This card gains 500 ATK for each WIND monster on your side of the field. While there is another WIND monster on your side of the field, your opponent cannot select this card as an attack target.

A 1000/900 wind winged beast eh? Not all that menacing by any means. It automatically boosts itself to 1500 since itself is a wind monster. And it can go as high as 3500. Pretty big. This card obviously works great with monsters that can be special summoned such as Silpheed and Flying Kamikiri. But in the current meta with Cyber Dragons and Monarchs as the big guns, this lil bird needs to have TWO fellow wind monsters out in order to beat the big brutes. And we are simply talking about out muscling them, let alone dealing with effects. The other effect this has is pretty simple. If Hunter Owl has a fellow wind monster out, Hunter Owl can’t be attacked. So, it could come in handy.

In short, if you are running a wind deck (make sure ya run Sipheed and Flying Kamakiri), then this might be a good bet. Otherwise, stay far far away.

So today we look at Hunter Owl. This is essentially a wind variant of Magician’s Valkrie. The nice bonus is that along with the standard lock down associated to monsters with similar effects, Hunter Owl gets an ATK bonus for every wind monster. So it starts at a respectable 1500 and the simple drop of another Hunter Owl gives you two 2000 ATK monsters that can’t be attacked. Not too bad.

Overall it offers decent support for a wind deck, or even just as a throw-in in a Harpy deck. The main problem is that it doesn’t do much. It offers no deck grinding, card removal or any form of card advantage, being a defensive card can be ok, but you have to find room. Also since it requires you to run multiple copies to reap the full benefits, it is not the most viable monster. Overall it’s just a decent card, nothing more.
