Gilasaurus

Let us take a moment of silence and bow our heads to the otherwise feared deck we used to play and/or go up against that was the Magical Scientist One Turn Kill deck.
....

....

Okay then.

Gilasaurus is better the earlier in the game you get it, much like Confiscation. If your opponent has nothing to Summon, then you just got a free monster out onto the field. If your opponent has Sangan in their Graveyard, you probably just screwed yourself. If they have anything 2100 ATK or bigger in there, again, probably gave them more than you're getting by putting Gila out.

Other than that combo, there are better options for getting Tribute fodder now.

Gilasaurus having never been reviewed was another surprise for me.  Granted, it wasn’t especially good when it was first released, but it ended up being handy for monsters like Gilford the Lightning or a wimpy but easy to use candidate for Inferno Reckless Summon.  None of these were stellar uses, though, and I don’t know if anyone has bothered with this in a Monarch deck.  Why would they?  Well, the 1400 ATK isn’t horrid and one should note the effect will allow the opponent to Special Summon a Monster from their Graveyard, but doesn’t require it.  That is, the opponent can choose not too… or more realistically if you use this early they can’t.  For example, maybe a Macrocosmos/Monarch build?

Dinosaurs like Gilasaurus for feeding Tributes.  Of course, as long as we have Cyber Dragon, that will probably be less than important.  Still, thanks to some of the other bits of support, Gilasaurus can also just be handy as a body for almost anything.  Summon it alongside a bigger Monster, play Tail Swipe and bounce whatever they revived and whatever they had out already, and then attack with both of your Dinosaurs direct.

The above may not sound like much, but notice how I wasn’t limited to a “Dinosaur only” deck this review.  That means I get to give a “real” score again instead of a “Dinosaur deck only” rating, so the score can be taken at face value.  As a whole, Gilasaurus is good at what it does and only suffers because of a few broken alternatives.

Today we look at a good card for the Dinosaur deck, Gilasaurus. Now, it does have a big drawback...obviously you don't want to be giving your opponent free summons of anything. However, can you imagaine how this would work say on your first turn?

Special summon one (or two or even three) on your first turn, or any turn for that matter while your opponent's Graveyard is empty. Then tribute them to normal summon a heavy hitter of your choice.
Otherwise, you probably shouldn't use it, as I said...you don't want to be giving your opponent free summons.

If you feel like adding some awesome Control to your Dino deck to keep your opponent's Graveyard empty, use two or three of Gilasaurus, but I would recommend at least one.

Rating:

3.25/5 Dino all around
4/5 for potential, yet unlikely circumstances

2.5/5 art

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

Gilasaurus

I do not like this monster because it provides you no advantage. A guick tribute but it allows the opponent to receive a plus one. If they bring back a sangan/spirit reaper you will cry.

Soul Exchange and Brain Conrtol are better options to set up tributes/swarm the field.

Gilasaurus:
To make a Yu-Gi-Oh card name - Step 2: Abreviate multiple words and combine them in some vaguely pronouncable way.

Once this card helped Scientist FTKs get Tribute into Catapult Turtle. Now, it does, ehm, err, nothing. 1400 ATK is nothing special, and giving your opponent an extra summon is far too harsh in almost all cases.
This guy should stay in the binder unless building an old school Magical Scientist deck.

Gilasaurus

Gilasaurus has a great effect. He can be Special Summoned even if your opponent does not have a monster in the Graveyard to Special Summon. His Cyber Dragon-like effect allows the Dino player to Tribute Summon for the higher lever Dinos if need be. The current Dino support makes the issue of Tribute summoning high-level Dinos irrelevant. That’s truly my favorite aspect of the Dinosaur-type.

Gilasaurus has uses outside of Dino decks as well. He’s famous for his role in the Magical Scientist First-Turn-Kill deck. He can be used as Special Summon fodder in other decks that don’t use Cyber Dragon. Heck, you can use both Cyber Dragon and Gilasaurus. Be careful though, Gilasaurus’s effect is best in the first 2-3 turns when your opponent’s Graveyard isn’t full of monsters that are worth Special Summoning.

Last Word: Gilasaurus is truly a classic monster. He has quite a bit of history. I think he can make a comeback in Dino decks. Hopefully, we get more support for Dinos in the future.

Ratings:

Traditional: 4/5 (Magical Scientist decks love Gilasaurus; I wonder if you can still play this deck in Traditional?)
Advanced: 2/5
