Chaos Sorcerer

With Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning banned, something needs to fill that void in all of our hearts: Chaos Sorcerer. He’s never been as good as BLS and he still isn’t. He’s always been a great card, but he’s not any better now.

2300 ATK is great, removing any face-up monster is also great. But the fact is he just can’t turn games around like BLS could. He’s certainly a useful monster, worth running if you have the necessary LIGHTs and DARKs; but unlike his predecessor, it isn’t worth tossing a bunch of LIGHTs and DARKs into your deck just so you can run him.

A nice advantage, though, is that he can be run in threes – so if you do have lots of LIGHTs and DARKs, he can make for a rentsy Chaos Deck.

ExMinion OfDarkness
Chaos Sorcerer

CHAOS IS NOT DEAD.

Everyone was so happy that Black Luster Soldier -- Envoy of the Beginning was banned. But guess what? You STILL have reason to fear your opponent uttering the words, "Remove 1 Light and 1 Dark..."

He may not be as broken as his brother, but he's still powerful enough on his own. 2300 ATK is a fairly powerful force in this format. If your opponent has a face-up, you automatically are going to get a +1 out of summoning him as he can remove something upon summon. Granted, there are still answers to him -- Smashing Ground, Sakuretsu Armor, Bottomless Trap Hole, a Goblin Attack Force or Steamroid kamikaze, D. D. Assailant ram/remove...but that can be said for just about ALL monsters.

Look at it this way; he was in the winning deck from a Shonen Jump Challenge. This pretty much means you'll be dealing with carbon copies of the deck (and thus, Chaos Sorcerer as well) for a good while.

Ugh. If you're using this as a replacement for BLS, you're an idiot. You're probably one of the same idiots that uses Enemy Controller as a replacement for Book of Moon, and you're probably one of the same idiots who still uses Metamorphosis because you haven't realized how bad it is in the new format.

But if you're using it because you realize it's a good card… Bravo. This card is an awesome one. Summoning for free is a huge advantage in this format, and 2300/2000 spits in the face of Enemy Controller users. The part where you can get +1 every turn? That's awesome as well. The part where there are NO GOOD LIGHTS LEFT TO PLAY? That sucks.

There are plenty of decks this can fit into, but don't alter your whole damn deck around it like a moron. It's a horrid early game card (complete Reaper/Don food…) and the chances of reliably getting a LIGHT in the graveyard are slim to none in an improper deck. On the other hand, it goes awesome in a Speed Relinquished and I'd imagine it would do well in a Silent Swordsman deck.

dawnyoshi Ah…Everybody’s little replacement to the “Pot of Greed” monster. Except this guy’s actually BALANCED!

Chaos Sorcerer is simple enough to describe. Its ATK is higher than that of a Cyber Dragon, its effect forces your opponent into playing defensively, and its ability can also be enhanced by Book of Moon and Tsukuyomi. It’s also a level six monster that can be morphed into a wide variety of powerful fusions, such as Fiend Skull Dragon, Ryu Senshi, and Dark Blade the Dragon Knight. This card is NOT made for pure aggro, so please remember that if you consider running copies of this spellcaster.

This card doesn’t define formats. It’s not insanely broken, and if it’s making you run light and dark monsters you don’t need to run in a theme, then someone should smack you. This card ISN’T a necessity, but it’s a very powerful advanced format tool for control players.

In traditional, you have the two ridiculous monsters that trump this. In limited, you may have a few issues in obtaining the light and dark monsters necessary to special summon this. However, if you’re playing with Dark Revelations 2 booster packs, this may be worth your 2nd or 3rd pick, simply because the card pool is a lot larger in that booster set. It’s obviously going to define your limited deck.

Dark Paladin
Like yesterday, we reviewed Chaos Sorcerer recently. He isn't a bad card, it just pales in comparison to the two Envoys and even Dark Magician of Chaos. Chaos Sorcerer allows you to remove 1 face up monster on the field from play, just like BLS. He also only needs 1 Light and 1 Dark monster to be removed fro our Sorcerer to be Special Summoned.

Chaos Sorcerer is also a common, meaning he's quite easily and cheap to obtain unlike DMoC and BLS (Ultra Rares) and CED (Secret Rare, TLM Variant now...) which is also a plus. Yet, he does have a major downside. However, this is an option for a "Chaos" deck now that BLS is gone, and he may see some play, we'll see.

Chaos Sorcerer ONLY has 2300 attack points. A 2400 attack point Sorcerer would've been nice as he could've matched Jinzo, Phoenix, and the like but he's vulnerable to them. He can only remove them if they are ONLY on the field first. If a Jinzo or the like comes AFTER your Sorcerer is summoned, you've got a problem.

However, perhaps I'm being overly critical on Chaos Sorcerer. It isn't a BAD card, it just has counterparts that are FAR superior even though they are only available in Traditional.

Ratings:

Traditional: 3.0/5 However, you can use BLS AND CED here so yea...

Advanced: 3.9/5 No more BLS so try it if you can't give up Chaos.

Art: 2.5/5 Not that intimidating

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)
