Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Dark Magician of Chaos
Ultra Rare

When this card is Normal Summoned or Special Summoned successfully, you can add 1 Spell Card from your Graveyard to your hand. A monster that is destroyed by this monster as a result of battle is removed from play instead of going to the Graveyard. When this card is destroyed or removed from the field, it is removed from play.

Type - Spellcaster / Effect Monster
Card Number - IOC-065

Card Ratings

Coin Flip

Dark Magician of Chaos is the second best two-trib in the game. K?
2800/2600 are ENTIRELY SOLID stats, and the effect that retrieves a Magic/Spell is h0t. DARK/Spellcaster is great… And the effect that kills Apprentice Magician, Sangan, Mystic Tomato and the like is also sexy. The downside of being removed from the game is miniscule.
Chances are a Bottomless Trap Hole will hit him anyway and remove him from the game before that happens.

The only problem is that there's a lot less to retrieve with him now that Raigeki and the crew are banned.

God, it feels against me to write such a short review on such a g0dly card… Meh. He's a solid card.

Dark Magician of Chaos

This was reviewed in my 50 best cards list, shown here:

http://www.pojo.com/yu-gi-oh/FeaturedWriters/JAE/2005/3-10.shtml

Because space was limited, the actual scores weren’t explained, so let me do that. But first, let’s explain the beast himself.

I personally feel that Dark Magician of Chaos does not belong in decks outside of Strike Ninja and Zombie/Coston builds(weird, but Double Coston is searchable). I know many players use it with great success (mainly because of its extraordinary power), but it does contribute quite a bit to the instability found in most cookie cutters.

The problem is that running a two tribute monster hurts the presence of your deck, no matter when it is drawn. Certainly you can hope for a lucky Painful Choice (pre-ban) or Graceful Charity (post-ban) and revive it for free, but barring those options DMoC becomes a dead weight card. Nevertheless, it is supremely powerful, so let’s move on to the review.

This review will be interesting, because I’m going to be explaining WHY I gave a card a certain rating, instead of explaining it first and then reviewing it. So if you think my system is terrible, or if you think it’s great, you’ll gain some insight :D.

Advantage F/H: This one is pretty obvious. Dark Magician of Chaos, once on the field, has an effect that rivals both the Envoys. It basically packs a Magician of Faith effect (which is far more unstable because it is a flip) into a 2800 attack powerhouse that negates Sinister Serpent, Pyramid Turtle, Sangan, and others. It lost a shade for costing two resources, but I mean seriously it’s one of the most advantageous cards, period.

Traditional Format Score:                                         9.5

Advanced Format Score:                                           9.5

Best Draw for the Situation: Cards like Metal Armored Bug received scores of 1 in the Best Draw despite having the same stats as Dark Magician of Chaos. The effect single-handedly lifts it 5 points; there are several reasons for this. First, certain spells in the graveyard may never be used again, so DMoC can provide the only opportunity to reuse that Heavy Storm (against 4 of your opponent’s strategic sets) or Delinquent Duo. Second, those spells might actually win you the game right then. While Magician can do the same thing (and is one of the best monsters in the game), you might need that push to end the game at that moment, instead of having to wait a turn. It’s still a two-tribute monster, making it dead weight often, but it still deserves a D, which is:

T:                                                                                6

A:                                                                                6

Attributes/Effect: This is a no-brainer. One of the best effects, a DARK monster, and a Spellcaster. Take off a shade for being two-tributes, but marking it down too much for that is like openly discriminating against DARK monsters. Pojo.com is an equal opportunity employer (I’m Korean myself), so the monster’s type doesn’t matter.

T:                                                                                9.5

A:                                                                                9.5

Dependability: Again, this card loses quite a bit, but also manages to surface back up to respectable “D” score levels because of how powerful it is. For example, the spell retrieval option is basically guaranteed, and he’ll become threat #1 when he hits the field.

T:                                                                                6

A:                                                                                6

The Bottom Line: He can be a very powerful, albeit unstable, monster.

A BAD System Score—

T:                                                                                3.88

A:                                                                                3.88

FORCE System Suggestions:

++        Contributes to Field Control, Resource Management, Enemy Disruption (very slightly)

--          Detracts from On-Field Presence (Heavily).

ExMinion OfDarkness Dark Magician of Chaos

In my opinion, next to Sacred Phoenix, he's one of the ONLY monsters WORTH two Tributes.

Respectable ATK, Magician of Faith effect, DD Crazy Beast effect, with the mere downside that he's RFG'd if he's killed. Given that he's wailing for damage and getting back a spell, usually he's done his job by then.

Considering elemental search use is very high right now (Shining Angel, Mystic Tomato, Mother Grizzly, etc.), everyone uses Premature and Call, and Sangan's coming back to Advanced, RFGing opposing monsters is never a bad thing.

Not much more to say here -- except that I wish they hadn't restricted him; I never even got to do the 3x DMoC/Painful Choice/Monster Reborn/You lose combo.

3.5/5

Tranorix Dark Magician of Chaos

Yay, a pointless review! Dark Magician of Chaos is an awesome monster. Two tributes hurts him but he has enough ATK to back it up (2800) and two amazing effects, the first being an instant Magician of Faith and the second allowing him to remove from play any monster he destroys in battle.

The third is meh. If he’s destroyed, he’s removed from play. If he’s tributed, he’s removed from play. If he’s returned to your hand, he’s removed from play.

Regardless, it’s a great monster – great in Cookie-Cutter Chaos Decks and even greater in Magician Decks. He’s restricted for a reason.

Snapper Dark Magician of Chaos

As Spellcaster Week progresses we get to Dark Magician of Chaos, the second most popular Spellcaster in the TCG.

DMoC is a very useful monster, despite its high Level. With 2800 ATK, it not only meets the standard for Level 7 or higher monsters but also is able to hold it own in battle. As a Spellcaster it receives little benefit due to most Spellcaster support being directed towards Dark Magician. Luckily for DMoC, some of that Dark Magician support is somewhat redirected to it in the form of Dedication through Light and Darkness, allowing you to Special Summon DMoC from almost anywhere.

DMoC has some very useful effects, the first being similar to that of Magician of Faith. Whenever DMoC is Normal or Special Summoned, you can add
1 Spell in your Graveyard to your hand. So look at it this way, you can reuse a Pot of Greed, Creature Swap, or a Nobleman of Crossout in exchange for summoning a 2800 ATK beatstick. If only all cards were like that. Prior to DMoC’s restriction, it was very popular to use Painful Choice to dump 3 DMoC in the Graveyard and use Monster Reborn to revive one, retrieve Monster Reborn, and repeat. After summoning all 3 DMoC, you’d attack your opponent directly for 8400 (assuming they had no monsters and didn’t stop the attacks). Even though you can now only use 1 DMoC, this effect is still very useful.

DMoC’s second effect causes any monster it destroys in battle to be removed from play as opposed to going to the Graveyard. So not only can you prevent the activation of effects like that of Sangan but you can also prevent monsters of a certain Type or Attribute from getting into the Graveyard (where they could benefit the opponent). DMoC’s final effect causes it to remove itself from play when it’s removed from the field. This effect can activate in a few ways, but DMoC’s destruction through a battle or a card effect is the most likely form. This is the only negative DMoC receives, causing you to be able to basically only use it once per duel. All in all, DMoC is a great monster, but should be reserved for Decks that can bring it back into play.

Advanced: 4.5/5. Despite the high chances it will be removed from play before it can do much damage, DMoC is very useful.
Traditional: 4.5/5. Despite the high chances it will be removed from play before it can do much damage, DMoC is very useful.
Overall (Dark Magician Deck): 4.5/5.
Art: 4/5. It’s a remake of Magician of Black Chaos.

Dark Paladin Dark Magician of Chaos

In my opinion, this guy is simply amazing. 2800 attack will stand up to everything except Blue Eyes White Dragon, Black Luster Soldier, and Injection Fairy Lily. 2600 defense is equally powerful stopping most 7 star monsters.

Lets take a look at him. Far superior to his ritual counterpart, the Magician of Black Chaos, which we don't have in the English TCG yet. First, he has a Magician of Faith type effect, but it's quicker being it's not a flip effect.
Plus, it's when this card is normal OR special summoned.

Now, in a dedicated Anti-Chaos/Remove From Play deck, this guy is a God. I kid you not. Get this guy out early enough in the game against a Chaos deck and your opponent will have some problems. If you're removing all of his monsters from play, then they won't have the necessary monsters to summon their Black Luster Soldier! Evil, isn't it? :)

Also, team this guy up with some Kycoo, and for the monsters you couldn't remove before Dark Magician of Chaos got summoned, Kycoo will take care of them.
However, the Magician himself is removed from play when he is destroyed, but is that such a big deal? I don't think so. Since your opponent is going to have monsters that have been removed, just use Dimension Fusion or even Retrun From the Different Dimension to bring him back.

Ratings:

Advanced: (in an Anti-Chaos/Remove From Play game) 4.5/5
Limited: 4.8/5 If you pull this in limited, how godly, just hope no one pulled CED or BLS
Art: 4.5/5 He almost looks like a mime.

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)
