Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Waboku

Card Number - SDP-044 / SDJ-046

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst.  3 ... average.
5 is the highest rating

Date Reviewed - 12.04.03

Previously Reviewed:  07.25.02

DuelMonster Thursday:

Waboku:
SDY-040/SDP-044/SDJ-046-Common
Normal Trap : Any damage inflicted by an opponent's monster is decreased to 0 during the turn this card is activated.

Pros:
Last the whole turn
Effects all opposing attacking Monsters
Saves all your Monsters from being destroyed in battle
Stops all/any battle damage to your Life Points
Chainable to anything (unless Decree or Jinzo are out)
Common- Three different ways to obtain it

Cons:
Face-Down attacked Monsters still get flipped
Jinzo, Royal Decree, Seven Tools, Solemn Judgment - Ownage
Doesn't protect you from Effect Damage

Combos:
Wall Of Illusion - Wait until they attempt an attack, flip Waboku, Wall lives and there Monster goes back to their hand.

Notes:
Waboku is one of the original "good" Traps that has begun to get more recognition lately than it did about a year ago. I think for the most part it's because of the heavy MST usage as well as a bunch of other Spell/Trap removal cards that have come out and the fact that Waboku can be chained/activated as it's being targeted to be destroyed or any time during a turn where as cards like Magic Cylinder, Mirror Force and others can't be activated UNTIL an attack it declared. That and more people now fully understand the potential and limits to this card no thanks to UpperDeck, but a lot of people on the Message Boards and other sites have helped people fully understand how Waboku works and how easy it is to use. One good example is Edos article: http://stormpages.com/edhrzic/Yugis06.htm which addresses some questions people may have.

With there really only being several cards that work against Waboku (Jinzo, Royal Decree, Seven Tools, Solemn Judgment) there isn't much reason not to run at least one in any casual deck and if you have the room three can't hurt. At the moment I run three and recently I've seen many other people doing the same.

The fact that it stops ALL battle damage from ALL attacking Monsters is extremely useful, it saves you Monsters and your LP at the same time. I can't really see a downside to this card except the fact that it's a Trap and Traps are somewhat slow and Jinzo/Decree completely negate it, but you can still chain Waboku to the opponent Monster Reborning Jinzo which can save your butt for a turn so if you haven't tried out a Waboku yet, go!, right now!, throw one it your deck and play!, you'll see what I mean.

Ratings:
Casual: 3.5
Tourney: 3.0
ArtWork: 2.0 - Eh... Some funky dressed women with a funky looking wand, not much worth looking at I guess.
MerrilHess Waboku

Any damage inflicted by an opponent's monster is decreased to 0 during the turn this card is activated.
Normal Trap
Card Number SDY-040/SDP-044/SDJ-046
Common

Upsides:
Chain-able
Protects for a turn
Screws over Injection
Screws over Yata-Garasu (for a turn anyway)

Down Sides:
Trap Card
Not chain-able from hand
Jinzo

In casual, this card is great. Protection is always a plus. I see this card as the replacement of Mirror Force. I actually tried it over Force and got good results. Force right now is still superior right now.

In tourney, this is great protection. It helps Goblins and Spears after they attack. It can kill an Injection that attack your Airknight, Gemini, etc... as they will have to choose to pay to keep her alive. Great card.

In sealed, this card is just as good as it is in tourney, except you won’t see injections, geminis, etc... running around.

I give it a 9.7/10

DrZap84 Waboku

This card has gotten better with time. The pros of this card is that it is chainable. Who doesn't love a chainable trap and is safe from all LP damage from a turn? Its really a great card. There have been times when I played waboku and it was either MST'd or HFD/Heavy Stormed. I mean, some people will actually waste a HFD on one M/T. I could understand if they were about to win the game, and just wanted to be safe, but there have been times when they just want to get rid of it, and they use HFD, and BAM! chain with waboku. There isn't really much to say about this card, except for the fact that its chainable and protects you for a turn. I would definitly go this card over Magic Cylinder, because HFD a magic cylinder hurts, HFD a waboku doesn't.

Tourney Rating: 4/5 Chainable, protects you for a turn

Casual Play: 4/5 see above

Limited play 4.5/5 Anything that can save a mon to stall for that bigger mon in your deck is good.

Waboku
(Trap)
Any damage inflicted by an opponent's monster is decreased to 0 during the turn this card is activated.

Hmmm.... I've never been a huge fan. It's pretty good though. Even though you should stick to Kuriboh I still like it's anytime activation. Here's a little ruling for ya'll (Thanks Edo). First off if the attacking monster is attacking a monster with the same attack (if in attack position) the defending monster survives and the attacking monster is destroyed. Get it? No? If not e-mail me and I'll explain it (My new one: supersonic@solomongameshop.com). If the attacking monster has more attack nothing happens in terms of both aren't destroyed. Waboku can be activated at any time unlike Mirror Force, Magic Cylinder, Negate Attack etc. Many people have different opinions. Some people say Negate Attack is better. It's like the Royal Decree vs. Jinzo. And in like that comparison there is no issue. Jinzo is better and so is Waboku. Like Dark Magician this card is released multiple times. That is always a plus. Speaking of pluses here is yugi2112's famous Pros and Cons...

Pros:
+ Any time activate
+ 0 Battle Damage
+ A potential destroyer
+ All monsters are effected
+ Common
+ Starter deck card

Cons:
- Doesn't destroy all the time
- Monster effects still come through (according to Edo)
- Emissionary of Obliteration is a better name

Not a bad card at all. It rules the promo Negate Attack.

Rating: 4.3/5
Art: 2.3
