GX Episode Summary
4: Making The Grade
by: HevyMtalKing

The show begins with helicopters flying to Duel Academy. These helicopters are doing everything it takes to deliver some rare cards to the students. By obtaining these rare cards, students will be able to modify their decks in order to gain an advantage in their upcoming exam duels.

That same morning, Jaden is rushing to the academy to attend class until he sees a lady trying to push a jeep up the hill towards the academy. Jaden figures that he could help her even though he'll be late (he even says himself that he was never on time for any of his other classes). After helping the lady with her jeep, Jaden rushes into the academy and watches a duel between two students while sitting near Cyrus. Bastion sees Jaden and Cyrus and tells them to hurry down to the card shop in order to pick up some of the rare cards that are being delivered.

Meanwhile, the rare cards arrive at the shop and it's not long before the students rush into the shop only to find out that the rare cards are gone. Crowler, who appears just after the students start complaining, even admits to taking the cards since he was the first one there Jaden and Cyrus are the last ones there and ask the clerk if she has any more cards left. Another woman (Dorothy) appears behind the counter and it turns out to be the same lady that Jaden helped out before.

Chazz and his two Obelisk friends are talking about how he nearly lost to Jaden. Crowler shows up from out of nowhere and says that he can help out Chazz by giving him some of the rare cards he took. Chazz points out that Jaden is a Slifer Red so that they wouldn't be paired, but Crowler says that he can make the match happen.

It's time for the exam duels as the match-up between Chazz and Jaden is announced. Chazz begins the duel by playing the spell card Magical Mallet which lets him select any number of cards in his hand, shuffles those cards back into his deck, and then draws the same number of cards afterwards. Of course, Chancellor Shepard catches onto the fact that Chazz is using some unusually rare cards while Crowler is enjoying what he thinks will be Jaden's biggest loss. Afterwards, Chazz reveals that he has another Magical Mallet and uses it right away. Chazz then uses a strategy to bring out VW-Tiger Catapult. Jaden begins his turn by summoning Elemental Hero Burstinatrix in defense mode while setting a card face down.

Chazz begins his turn by using the effect of VW-Tiger Catapult which forces Burstinatrix into attack mode and then attacks Burstinatrix with VW. Things aren't looking so good for Jaden as his options are limited. Chazz is then able to summon the XYZ-Dragon Cannon monster and merge it with the VW to create VWXYZ-Dragon Catapult Cannon. Chazz attacks Jaden directly which leaves Jaden with an astonishing low number of points. Jaden is able to draw Winged Kuriboh along with a couple of cards that Dorothy gave to Jaden before the match started. Jaden then summons the Winged Kuriboh in defense mode and sets a card face down.

Chazz then begins his turn by drawing a card and uses VWXYZ to attack Jaden's winged friend until Jaden springs Transcendent Wings which causes Winged Kuriboh to change into Winged Kuriboh LV.10. Jaden then sacrifices his new monster in order to activate a powerful special ability which destroys Chazz's monsters and deals damage to Chazz equal to the amount of ATK points of monsters destroyed by this effect. Jaden then summons an Elemental Hero Avian to attack Chazz directly and finish off the duel. Jaden's duel was so impressive that he was offered to move up into the Ra Yellow rank.

Cyrus and Chum Li are back at their dorm wondering what Jaden's life as a Ra Yellow is like until Jaden swings by to tell them that he isn't going anywhere without his friends. Who really says that being a Slifer was a bad thing?
