Unholy Alliance

You Can Do That?

Well, when I was playing in my local today (I'm writing this on Sunday) an interesting deck was thought up. My friend was playing a zombie deck, more like the old strategy than the new one with Goblin Zombie. He was complaining that it never works, as Pyramid Turtle is just not the beast he used to be. So jokingly, I said "Why not combine it with your Lightsworn cards?" We all had a good laugh, and then the room got strangely silent as brains began to think. So brainstorming, I came up with a way to combine the polar opposites of the ideological spectrum, a Zombiesworn deck.

Now the ideas of the decks are actually not so far apart. They both like to Special Summon monsters from the graveyard and both use Summoners (Lumina and Zombie Master) that combo very nicely with card of safe return. The Lightsworn even have a handy win condition in the form of Judgment Dragon, and the DARK zombies can make use of Dark Armed Dragon. Well my brain has been going at about 1 hundred miles a minute since about 5:00, so I came up with this:

Unholy Alliance

Monsters

2x Light and Darkness Dragon

3x Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner
3x Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress
2x Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter
3x Zombie Master
3x Goblin Zombie
1x Il Blud
1x Ryu Kokki
1x Spirit Reaper
1x Sangan

Spells-15

3x Card of Safe Return
3x Book of Life
2x Allure of Darkness
2x Lightning Vortex
1x Brain Control
1x Mystical Space Typhoon
1x Heavy Storm
1x Monster Reborn
1x Premature Burial

Traps-5

1x Mirror Force
1x Torrential Tribute
1x Trap Dustshoot
1x Mind Crush
1x Crush Card Virus

Even Good Decks Go Bad

This is by no means a finished product. I wanted to have more monsters in the deck, even to play Wulf, Lightsworn Beast, but with the zombie part of the deck, there was just no room. A lot of the card choices were judgment calls, as both zombies and Lightsworn have an immense card pool to draw on. I felt that Solar Recharge was inferior to Allure of Darkness, as we are going to be milling through the deck incredibly fast with the zombies and Lightsworn. Pyramid Turtle was neither LIGHT nor DARK and wants to be on the field as opposed to the graveyard, which would not work very well for this deck. Defensive Traps were taken out for Control Traps, I even hesitated putting Mirror Force into the deck, as it is not quite as good as it once was.

It is really hard to balance the sheer magnitude of cards that we could put into the deck, and key cards like Ryu Kokki and Il Blud were only included at one copy each. However, I felt it important for the deck to have a win condition, and Light and Darkness Dragon was it. With his success at big name tournaments lately, and the multitude of monsters that will be on the field to tribute for him, he was almost my first pick for this deck. Unfortunately, there are not enough Lightsworn and maybe not even enough DARK monsters to justify playing Judgment Dragon and Dark Armed Dragon.

Ewww, That's Just Not Right...

Basically the deck has amazing first turn sets. Sangan, Spirit Reaper, Goblin Zombie and Ryko are all ideal, even a first turn Lumina is not that bad. From there, Zombie Master, Il Blud, Lyla and Light and Darkness Dragon take over. With the right Lightsworn drops, you can get Light and Darkness Dragon out on turn two, which very few decks can. Card of Safe Return is your primary Draw Engine, fueled by Lumina, Zombie Master, Monster Reborn, Premature Burial, Il Blud and Book of Life. Mind Crush, Trap Dustshoot and Crush Card Virus are all here to control the hand fo the opponent, so that they have no answer to your swarm of Lightsworn and zombies. Crush Card was a hard choice, as the deck only runs two targets, Sangan and SPirit Reaper, but I figure with all of the Special Summoning going on, you should not have a problem getting either to the field.

The deck is very vulnerable to Macro Cosmos. Which is why Lyla is being played int he deck. She can kill threats as well as having a 3-Card Lightsworn Dump and 1700 ATK. D.D. Crow is a bit more troublesome, but hopefully Mind Crush and Trap Dustshoot will have taken care of the feathered annoyance. Caius the Shadow Monarch is also a concern, as he does not send your warriors and undead back to the graveyard, but instead removes them from play. That is what Crush Card Virus is for, and you may even win before your opponent has a chance to drop him.

This deck can be built in many different ways, this is just the one that popped out to me at 1 in the morning as I am finishing this. Solar Recharge, Ehren, Lightsworn Monk, and even Judgment Dragon can be added in, to skew the deck one way or the other. Play around with it, and as my art teacher says, make it bootiful.

I know I promised my Create-A-Card Results now, but my judges have not made up their minds yet, expect two articles form me in the next three weeks, The results and a new deck that utilizes Elemental Hero Neos to his full potential!
