Counter This!

December 18, 2007

You Have Answers to Everything!!!

That is what this next deck is all about. Unlike a true Counter Fairy build, this one prefers to just negate most of the things that your opponent does, and then get rid of the cards that it couldn't counter by summoning a mess of Monarchs. I did not come up with this idea, but instead it was submitted to me by Anthony Warlick, who emailed me the list just the other day. So I present to you the list in it's entirety and then with the modifications that I have thrown in because of personal preference or some other reason.

With Heaven's Wrath

Monsters 16
3X Raiza
3X Thestalos
3X Zaborg
3X Bountiful Artemis
2X Cat of ill omen
2X Mask of Darkness

Magic 5
3X D.D. Capsule
2X pot of avarice

Traps 20
3X Divine Wrath
3X Forced Back
3x solemn judgment
3X Dark bribe
2X Seven tools of the bandit
2X Synthetic Seraphim
3x Magic Drain

The Battle Plan

The idea is to get to Synthetic Seraphim as quickly as possible, and then to negate tons of your opponent's cards and then tribute the tokens off for Monarchs. The idea being that your opponent will just be out of options before you are and you'll have a couple of Monarchs on the field. I can definitely see that Anthony built this deck with efficiency in mind, as well as cost, because I do have a few subtractions to make to the deck.

-2 Zaborg the Thunder Monarch
-1 Pot of Avarice
-1 Divine Wrath
-2 Seven Tools of the Bandit

I am cutting two copies of Zaborg simply because he is not quite as powerful as he used to be. Sangan, Card Trooper, Treeborn Frog and Destiny Hero DiscCommander make him next to useless against them, but i am still retaining one copy because sometimes you just need to blast stuff with a bolt of Lightning.

I am cutting a copy of  Pot of Avarice because the deck does not really put any monsters in the graveyard if it can help it. The Extra draw power is nice, but it will likely be a dead card when you really need another card in it's place. Pot is fine at 1.

I cut one copy of DivineWrath because it is a lot more situational than a lot of the other trap cards that we are using. We also have a lot to deal with monsters already in the deck, so it seems rather pointless to have the deck so focused on monster removal when you don't really need it.

Lastly I am cutting two copies of Seven Tools of the Bandit as it is really limited with what it can do, and there is already Dark Bribe and Solemn Judgment to deal with trap cards should the need arise.

Strike, Like Lightning!

Now with every deck fix, there are additions as well as subtractions. I feel that they will help the deck to run better and be more ready to deal with what a big name tournament could have in store for it.

+2 Mobius the Frost Monarch
+1 Gold Sarcophagus
+1 Brain Control
+1 Premature Burial
+1 Synthetic Seraphim

I am adding Mobius, simply because he can clear out a backfield. There are not a whole lot of Offensive options in this deck so it seems best to preserve them wherever and whenever we get the chance to. Plus he has the Monarch standard of 2400 ATK, so he is a force on the field as well.

I added Gold Sarcophagus because it does what the Capsule does, but better, allowing you to get the card regardless of it being destroyed or not. Unfortunately right now it is available only to the best players in the game. Once it is reprinted though, we could all use a copy of it in most decks.

I added Brain Control simply because it is the ultimate tool available for Monarchs. It will also win you a lot of games, just by stealing their monster. The 800 LP cost is a bit of a concern with 3 Solemn Judgment's in the deck, but likely it will not be a huge issue.

Premature Burial was added for pretty much the same reasons as Brain Control. It not only gets you a Monarch on a pinch, but can also revive Artemis for some badly needed draw power. Premature also gives you that one extra attacker for the game. 800 LP is a lot, but it shouldn't matter most of the time.

Adding another Synthetic Seraphim is almost a no brainer. It allows you to get the tokens needed in order to summon your Monarchs as well as defenders in a pinch and another effect to throw at Light and Darkness Dragon should he ever get on the field.

Another short article here, but finals are dragging me down to a watery grave. But I just have to write about this stuff sometimes you know. Contact me at raptor1k@hotmail.com and I'll be happy to respond.

Thanks for reading!
