Forbidden Chalice

The last time we reviewed Forbidden Chalice, this nifty little spell received a wide range of scores. Like its sister that came after it, Forbidden Lance, a lot of players didn’t really know what to make of a card meant solely for addition into any deck the players chooses to consider it for. But as the game shifted ever more dramatically toward monster dominance, Chalice has found continual tech play and side deck presence as the years have gone by.

While the current format doesn’t allow her much room to work, the link format could very well find a place for Forbidden Chalice. Since the extra deck isn’t nearly as accessible, locking down the one Link monster the opponent worked hard for could be a huge ace. We’ve reviewed a numbers of cards that have made a comeback due to the new rules and Chalice has a chance to serve as one of those revived relics.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Forbidden Chalice is another effect negation card to pack into your Side Deck and Main Deck.

Quick-play flexibility on either turn, 400 ATK boost isn't bad for a little more ATK, but the negation is what is important. The boost may not matter when using it against your opponent to stop the beginnings of a big turn, especially when the monster has a much lower ATK that your monster(s) on the field. That ATK boost is what makes Chalice potentially better than other negation cards, letting it be chained in the Damage Step to stop Flip and other effects. Zoodiac monsters have low ATK and are left susceptible when their effects get negated, dropping monsters like Drident's ATK to 0.

Chalice will endure as a great card. Easy to use, use during either turn, and stopping potential all in one.

Forbidden Chalice is a deceptively simple QuickPlay Spell Card. It targets a face-up monster to gain 400 Atk and lose its effects for a turn. Forbidden Chalice doesn't just get a pass because of its simplicity. She earns her stay in the Side Deck for being versatile. It can be activated during either player's turn and during the damage step. There is no cost, but the only downside is that it targets. So it misses monsters that are immune to targeting effects. 400 Atk boost might not seem like a lot, but if it ever pushes your monster over an opponent's monster then it has already gained you advantage. So it can stall or it can boost. What else? It can be searched as a bluff. There are a handful of cards that search Spells and QuickPlay Spells. Try searching it and then setting Dark Hole or something. If it's your turn, you can still activate Forbidden Chalice from your hand. Mind games can be  fun. Good luck!

Forbidden Chalice

This weeks throwback thursday is Forbidden Chalice, a quickplay spell that was last reviewed back in 2009.

Quick and simple with this one. Chalice lets you target any monster on the field and until the end of the turn, it gains 400 attack but any effects it had are negated. It's good for giving a quick attack boost to a monster that's used its effect already that turn, or boosting an ignition effect monster during the opponents turn. Or just using it on an opponents monster to remove any troublesome effects it may have.

More relevant and useful now than it was before, Chalice still doesn't see much play.

Advanced 3/5 Another Forbidden card with that same maiden. She really does like taunting whoever owns all those forbidden items.

Forbidden Chalice:

This week for Throwback Thursday, we look at a card that is rising in the meta once again, and that is Forbidden Chalice.

Chalice does only one thing, negate a monster effect and gives said monster 400 ATK. This can be really good against Zoodiac as you can negate the effect to summon a Ratiper or negate Broadbull's effect to search. Against True Dracos, you can negate the smaller True Dracos so they don't get another Continuous S/T or a Monster and if your opponent didn't summon Master Peace with a spell, use Chalice on it to negate it's effect and it will lose its protection forever.

This card was good when it came out, and it is still good today.

Advanced Rating: 4/5
