Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Scrap Soldier
#STBL-EN024

This card cannot be used as a Synchro Material Monster, except for the Synchro Summon of a "Scrap" monster. If this face-up Defense Position card is selected as an attack target, destroy this card at the end of the Battle Phase. If this card is destroyed by the effect of a "Scrap" card and sent to the Graveyard, you can select 1 "Scrap" monster in your Graveyard, except "Scrap Soldier", and add it to your hand.

Scrap Soldier has a lot of text on him, does he not?  We have a Level 5, Earth attributed Warrior, with 2100 attack and 700 defense.  But wait, did I mention our metallic robot friend is a Tuner, because that's kind of important.

Now, you've heard this before, but you can't Synchro Summon with Scrap Soldier unless performing said Synchro Summon for a "Scrap" monster.  If this card (while in face-up defense position) is selected as an attack target, destroy this card at the end of the Battle Phase.

If this card is destroyed by the effect of a "Scrap" card, and sent to the Graveyard, select one "Scrap" monster in your Graveyard (other than himself) and add it to your Hand.  All right, this isn't the easiest tool to Synchro with, being a Level 5 monster.

He actually seems a bit counter-productive to the Scrap thing, but to someone who plays Scrap Decks, they can obviously put the Soldier to good use.  Being Level 5 actually helps about as much as it hinders itself, not to further complicate things.  It recycles, as Scraps do, and do well.

Scrap Soldier causes me to break my Scrap pun vow. It's more like Crap Soldier.

First off, he's a level 5 Tuner with low ATK and no inherit special summoning ability. Right away, that isn't good. Slightly worse because he can only make other Scraps. And that's all he does.

He needs to be in face-up defense, then be attacked, and survive in order to blow himself up and use his generic Scrap ability. Especially with 700 DEF, that's atrocious. You'll need Waboku to make that happen, and that's alreayd useless.

Alright, scrap soldier.  He is an alright card for the scrap archetype to have, but it does have its flaws.

First, is a level five monster, making him difficult to utilize while in your hand, not to mention his very low stats make him even worse to have in your hand. It definitely needs to be put in the graveyard as soon as possible. Next, it can only be used for scrap synchros. This might not seem so bad since it is a level 5 tuner, but in those moments where you would use him and a scrap searcher to make a goyo guardian or a brionic, you can’t do it. On the other hand, scrap soldier isn’t completely useless.

Scrap soldier broadened the range of the possible synchro summoning for scrap chimera. With soldier, you can easily use scrap twin, which can turn the tide of some duels.  Or you could wait to synchro with soldier and chimera to do more damage, using soldier to run over a semi strong monster of theirs.  Scrap soldier was a fine addition to the scrap deck, but I would never run more than one, because it can clog your hand, and you can simply reuse it once it hits the grave.
