Tranorix Penumbral Soldier Lady

Yes, my week eventually makes its way to Soul of the Duelist. Today's card is Penumbral Soldier Lady, a Super and Ultimate Rare. She's a Warrior, but she can’t be searched by RotA or Freed; and she can't be Special Summoned by Marauding Captain. Warriors already have a pretty good tribute monster in Freed the Matchless General, and with a mediocre ATK (for a 6-star monster) of 2100, Penumbral Soldier Lady seems weak in comparison.

The effect is something that might be useful, but more often than not, it won't be. It's pretty obvious that the best use of Penumbral Soldier Lady is to kill Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning. Her effect will boost her ATK to 3100, just enough to kill it in battle. The effect will also help her overtake other strong LIGHT monsters, such as Kaiser Glider (seldom played) and Blue Eyes White Dragon. And it will, of course, allow her to do extra damage when attacking any LIGHT monster – 1200 damage against Airknight Parshath, 1700 damage against Shining Angel, etc.

She's nothing spectacular, but she certainly isn't a bad choice for DARK-themed Warrior Decks, perhaps those based around Strike Ninja. She'd also be an okay Side Deck card for any Warrior Deck (maybe non-Warrior too) just in case a LIGHT Deck were to show up. She's decent – not great, but decent.

Traditional – CCCC: 2/5
Traditional – DARK/Warrior Deck: 3/5
Advanced – DARK/Warrior Deck: 3.5/5
ExMinion OfDarkness Penumbral Soldier Lady

Can we say "Waste of a Super Rare?"

2100 ATK is good for Tribute monsters that have AWESOME effects (V-lord). Does this card have an awesome effects? Uh...no.

It has a built-in Axe against Light types. Okay, it kills BLS. The rest of the time you are attacking a Light monster it really won't matter (DDWL, Shining Angel) or the boost will actually hurt you as much as them (Reflect Bounder).

1400 defense makes it Witchable...but who would want to waste a WotBF search on this?

Traditional: 1.5/5 (for killing BLS)
Advanced: 1.5/5 (Same thing)
Snapper We’re getting back into SOD cards today, with today’s card being Penumbral
Soldier Lady, a monster that has possibilities to be a thorn in your
opponent’s side.

Stats: Penumbral Soldier Lady has 2100 ATK and 1400 DEF, allowing you to
search for it with Sangan. The ATK is a little low for a monster that
requires a tribute, but the effect somewhat makes up for it. She’s a DARK
monster, giving her plenty of support. She’s also a Warrior, giving her the
usual uses they have. Stats – Good.

Effect: Penumbral Soldier Lady’s effect is simple; whenever she does battle
with a LIGHT monster, her ATK goes up by 1000. It doesn’t matter who’s turn
it is or if she’s the monster attacking; as long as she is involved in
battle with a LIGHT monster, she gets the boost. This effect has uses,
particularly against a deck with lots of LIGHT monsters, giving your
opponent an extra 1000 points of damage whenever she attacks. Her effect is
also helpful against decks that focus around one or more of the 29 LIGHT
monsters that have an ATK greater than 2100 (which won’t happen very often).
If this happens, your opponent will most likely not have a monster to defeat
her with. However, this possibly good effect is of course limited to LIGHT
monsters, making her just a weak level 6 monster whenever she battles a
monster of a different Attribute. Effect – Good.

Combos: The only card I can think of that would help out Penumbral Soldier
Lady is DNA Transplant, allowing you to make all of your opponent’s monsters
LIGHT monsters, which would basically make Penumbral Soldier Lady a
permanent 3100 ATK monster.

Usability: There aren’t any decks I can think of that Penumbral Soldier Lady
works particularly well in. Maybe an Anti-LIGHT Deck, but I’ve never seen or
heard of a deck like that before.

Penumbral Soldier Lady is a card that has the could have been a great card,
but it was given the curse of situationality.

Advanced Format: 2/5. There are better tribute monsters in Advanced.
Traditional Format: 2/5. There are better tribute monsters in Traditional.
Art: 4/5. Nicely drawn. Enough said.
Coin Flip Penumbral Soldier Lady is another Mystical Space Typhoon in translations... Moon Warrior Girl + Cyclone + Drugs = Mystical Space Typhoon + Penumbral Soldier Lady. REALLY. Just stop.

Its attack is decent for a tribute monster. People play Airknight for the insane ability, people play Blowback Dragon for the insane ability... Let's look at its ability... Nope, not insane. The sad thing about built-in attack increases is that you could just as easily accomplish the same thing with a single Axe of Despair on a more powerful monster with a better effect worth using. Say, Airknight Perseus.

The effect will be useful at the very least, though. Several people run 3x DDWL, Blade Knight, BLS, and even a Magician of Faith or Reflect Bounder. Oh, by the way, this vs. Reflect Bounder: The attacking PSL's controller loses 2100 attack, and then the 1000 attack increase applies after the effect.

Considering that barely anyone uses Wind, Earth, Water or Fire monsters, (Water being third with Earth in fourth), you have a roughly 40% chance of using the effect in an average deck. DNA Transplant will make her a 3100 for a long time.

I'd like to give her a high rating, but I could only do so in Artwork - everywhere else she is lacking. Better than her counterpart, though, which will be reviewed next week.

Any deck: 2.7/5
Against a light deck: 3.5/5
dawnyoshi Today's card is Dark Magician of Chaos' dream lady and Black Luster Soldier- Envoy of the Beginning's evil stalker ex-girlfriend.

Penumbral Soldier Lady is a relatively week one sacrifice monster. It's 2100 ATK, which just barely beats out Berserk Gorilla (thus making it more playable). Its effect is a nightmare to the last remaining Envoy in advanced format- the Envoy of the Beginning. When battling any light attribute monster (envoy of the beginning), her ATK is increased by 1000 during the damage step (BLS has 3000), resulting in a major hurting to your opponent if your opponent is running light monsters (BLS is sad and in pain).

Other than against Envoy of the Beginning, it's rare that your opponent will even be running light monsters that were over 2100 ATK to start with. A nice little combo with this is to hammer down on your opponent's blade knights and Magicians of Faith (if someone switched to attack mode). Another option is to use DNA Transplant to make all monsters light attributes, resulting in Penumbral Soldier Lady being able to crush any monster in battle.

In limited, I really can't recommend this card. There's hardly any light types to go up against from Soul of the Duelist.

Traditional Format: 2/5

Advanced Format: 3/5

Limited Format: 2/5

Wednesday: Penumbral Soldier Lady

Rated For: Anti-Light Sidedeck

Wednesday brings us a rather interesting card, Penumbral Soldier Lady (penumbral means partially shadowy). See, Yu-Gi-Oh does help us with vocabulary!

Anyways, this is a rather interesting card because it’s specifically made to counter light types; obviously, a 6 star 2100 attack monster won’t do much in other situations. Is it worthy of side-deck or even main-deck status? Let’s take a look.

Advantage F/H: Once again, a 2100 attack monster isn’t worth much as a tribute monster. It won’t even let you possess complete field control because of equip spells and such that are running around. Other tribute monsters are far better when it comes to seizing and maintaining field control.                            2.5/10.

Best Draw for the Situation: There is currently only one commonly played light monster with an attack higher than PSL’s: Black Luster Soldier- Envoy of the Beginning. Yes, this is one of the few cards that can take it down in single-handed combat. It will also do scads of damage against other light monsters, but think of this: of the commonly played light monsters, D.D Warrior Lady and Blade Knight, D.D Warrior Lady will also take PSL down with her. This basically means PSLady is only a good draw when faced against a Black Luster Soldier or a Blade Knight. Bleh.                2.5/10.

Attributes/Effect: Once again, 2100 is a horrible attack score. The effect is sub par; hardly spectacular.                       4/10.

Dependability: Her best draw score was lowered because her effect is not entirely reliable. Sure, you could make a DNA deck centering around her, but I think Kinetic Soldier decks are a far better alternative to this one.                                 4/10.

The Bottom Line: Good idea, but horrible stats and such weigh her down greatly.

A BAD Score: 13/40=                                    33/100.

Cards it functions well with:  Creature Swap, DNA Transplant.
