Tranorix Tuesday: Needle Burrower

Today's card is an interesting Super from Ancient Sanctuary, Needle Burrower. Looking at the stats, you won't be impressed; 1700 ATK is quite bad for a tribute monster, and 1700 DEF makes him completely unsearchable. He is, however, a Machine, which certainly boosts his playability.

The effect is, of course, the only reason anyone would even consider playing Needle Burrower; and the effect is a very good one. When you kill a monster, you do 500 damage times that monster's level. Kill a Witch and you'll do 2000 damage. Kill something bigger and you'll do even more. Granted, with 1700 ATK, Needle Burrower won't be killing many beatsticks; but you must keep in mind that he IS a Machine and thus benefits from Limiter Removal. Obviously this is what increases his playability.

An interesting little combo with Needle Burrower is to bring out Koitsu (remember Koitsu? The Level 10, 200 ATK Union monster that goes on Aitsu?) via something like Mother Grizzly, Creature Swap it, then slam into it with Needle Burrower. 1700 – 200 = 1500 damage, + 5000 damage from the effect...that's 6500 damage. Granted, it requires a few cards; but it would be something interesting around which to base a deck.

Overall, Needle Burrower is a fun card that's really most effective in a Machine Deck. I wouldn't recommend playing him in most others, even Burners (unless you want to try out that Koitsu combo), since he's fairly unreliable.

Typical tournament deck: 2/5
Machine deck: 4/5
OVERALL RATING: 3/5
ExMinion OfDarkness Tuesday:
Needle Burrower

MORE BURN! But in a non-burn, have to kill something kind of way. Insanely low attack for a Tribute monster...reminds me of LOD, actually. But great damage if it manages to kill something in battle.

You'll honestly have to Equip this card to get it going...one Axe of Despair should suffice for anything you'll see on the normal battlefield (unless they have BLS or CED out, which will require two Eqiups.)

But the rewards are pretty good. +2000 for beating a beatstick. +3000 for beating Jinzo. +4000 damage if it kills a Chaos monster! I know that won't happen very often, but the first two usually will. Control will hate this guy because most of its monsters are under 1700...and this SERIOUSLY punishes it for using its searchers.

This card needs a deck made around it, mainly because it's going to require different support than your cookie cutter beatdown, chaos, or control. So just wait until DM7 makes one and copy that (j/k!)

2.5/5
MerrilHess Needle Burrower

This card is really good if you play it right. I want to get some along with KA-Des Scissors to build a nice deck.

Pros:
It can deal massive damage if it destroys a high level creature. If you Limiter Removal, then attack someone's Jinzo, for example, you would deal 1000 overflow damage, then 3000 more damage due to this effect. Kill Jinzo and do 1/2 of your opponent's life isn't bad right? Then there is the fact that it's a machine, so it can get very big, very fast. 1700 attack is decent, as well.

Cons:
It's a tribute Monster with 1700 attack. That is not very good. He is totally unsearchable, too. That's all I can think of.

Overall, I give Needle Burrower a 7/10. It's good if you build the deck right, otherwise it isn't too good.
