Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Different Dimension Dragon

SomeGuy Wednesday - Different Dimension Dragon

(Light/Dragon/5/1200/1500)
The effect of a Spell or Trap Card cannot destroy this card unless the Spell or Trap card specifically designates a target. This card cannot be destroyed as a result of battle when this card battles with a monster with an ATK of 1900 or less.

D. D. Dragon has one large flaw, it requires a Tribute to Summon. It would cream any pure-1900 Beatdown deck, but those aren't exactly high-end tournament winning decks anyway.

With a mere 1200 ATK, at least 70% of a given deck's Monster lineup can destroy it via attacking. Although, not being able to be destroyed by Torrential Tribute, Mirror Force, Raigeki, Dark Hole and others like it is always intriguing.

Don't even bother playing with this card in Limited. And if it's Draft you are partaking in, then only pick it if you are either counter drafting or there's absolutely nothing else worth choosing over it. Why's it so bad here? Pretty much all "Draft Monsters" have an ATK between 1000 and 1800. Meaning that 95% of the time it's going to be a useless Tribute Monster in your hand.

Ok, for the first time in a while, I have no tests to worry about since all of my 1st semester courses are dealt with, so I can once again do the CotD. Today’s card is a personal favorite from the new set, DCR, D. D. Dragon or Different Dimension Dragon. It’s Angel-able, so it is fast and the fact that I can’t be killed by 1900 beat-sticks is awesome. Just be sure to keep it protected from V-Lord and Jinzo and Zombrya and Goblin Attack Force and I think you get my point. But this card is not great because so many above 1900 best-sticks exist. The part about not being destroyed by spells and traps that don’t target it is simply amazing. Too bad it’s on an effect on a not so decent monster, but I love it just the same. I give Different Dimension Dragon a 6/10.

First off, some of you may be asking, what exactly CAN destroy / CANNOT destroy Different Dimension Dragon? Cards like Dark Hole, Raigeki, Fissure, Mirror Force, or Torrential Tribute CANNOT destroy Different Dimension Dragon because they do not specifically designate a target. Cards like Dark Core, Raigeki Break, Ring of Destruction, or Trap Hole CAN destroy DDDragon (shorter name) because they DO designate a target. In addition, Tribe-Infecting Virus, although non-targeted, will work on DDDragon, because it’s a MONSTER effect, not a Spell or Trap effect.

Now, onto the review. This card definitely has potential. Aside from having immunities to the massive removal Spell and Trap cards, its stats (mainly its defense) are pretty decent as well. With 1500 defense, if it were in defense position, a Don Zaloog or Mystic Tomato could not destroy it. In addition, the commonly played 1900’s like Archfiend Soldier, Luster Dragon, and Skilled Dark Magician could not destroy it because of DDDragon’s second effect. Only a handful of monsters would be able to destroy it through battle (Jinzo, Vampire Lord, Injection Fairy Lily, a counter-less Breaker, and Reflect Bounder).

Sure, it is 5 stars, meaning you’d have to tribute to bring this guy out, but you probably won’t be running this in your average beatdown / control deck. This card really shines in a Light / Fairy deck. Using Shining Angel, you could bring this card out very early in the game without a tribute, keeping you relatively safe from most major removal cards. Additionally, you could use this card’s effect in an offensive way. Your opponent has lots of monsters on the field? Normal or Special summon this card, and then activate Torrential Tribute. All your opponent’s monsters will die, but Different Dimension Dragon will not. If you have DDDragon on the field, along with a Witch or Sangan, use Dark Hole, and search for Yata-Garasu. Your opponent loses card advantage through Yata, AND you have a monster to block for you.

Tournament: 2.7/5 – Good solid card, makes Light decks more tournament-viable

Draft: 3.2/5.0 – Always fun to see your opponent work hard just to get rid of one card.

Artwork 4.0/5 – Great abstract picture.

Closing Line – What’s that in your hand? Raigeki, Dark Hole, Mirror Force, and Torrential? My Dragon laughs at you.
