I'm the Disgruntled Gremlin and I'm here to talk to you about the Dark Magician support cards. In the current English game, the Dark Magician has been ridiculed for its weak attack power and high summoning cost. Duelists have dubbed him "The Kiddie Card" and "The Dork Magician." However, the following ten Japanese cards are designed to give this Mage a chance in the heavy beatdown environment. 10) Dark Sage: This card has 2800 attack power, and can revive a magic card from your graveyard. The catch is that he can only be summoned by you having a Dark Magician in play and you calling the Time Wizard's flip correctly. Your Dark Magician can then be sacrificed to summon Dark Sage from your deck. This is a real pain, and in my opinion not a very good combo, but if you had the bizarre urge to build a Second Coin Toss deck around him, I guess it MIGHT be decent. 9) Magical Knives This simple magic card can destroy one opponent's monster so long as you have a Dark Magician on the field. This can be like a free TttDoomed if you've just used Dark Magic Curtain or Skilled Dark Magician, and can be kind of useful (though far from a staple) in a Dark Magician deck. 8) Dark Magic Ritual This ritual card is used to summon #7: The Magician of Black Chaos. However, this ritual has some combos of its own. The Dark Magician Girl card requires Dark Magicians in the graveyard for her optimum strength, so you can try to tribute your Mages using this ritual. 7) Magician of Black Chaos This level 8 2800/2600 attack ritual card is best used for getting mages into the graveyard (with its ritual card), but can also power up Dark Magician Girl from the graveyard, so it's a useful card to have in a Mage deck. 6) Dark Magic Curain This magic card comes with the steep cost of half your lifepoints, but if you use it, you can summon a Dark Magician from your deck (you can't summon any monsters on the turn you used this card either). This can be very powerful if you want to summon Black Paladin, or just get a monster out to protect you. You may want to use some cards to cut down on the lifepoint damage to make this card more useful. 5) Cyber Stein This card isn't used directly with the Dark Magician...it's the Black Paladin combo that gets it on the list. This monster lets you pay 5000 lifepoints to summon any fusion monster immediately. Most people like using it with Blue Eyes Ultimate, but thanks to cards like Dark Magic Curtain, it works nicely with Black Paladin too. Why? Because Dark Magician decks tend to lose lots of lifepoints (thanks to Dark Magic Curtain cards, failed Dark Sage summonings, Toon World, etc.) so you can activate powerful cards like Last Turn and Megamorph to obliterate your opponent! 4) Black Paladin This fusion of Dark Magician and Buster Blader has 2900 attack points, is powered up 500 for any dragons on either field or graveyard (DNA Surgery anyone?) and has an effec that lets you negate enemy magic cards by discarding a card from your hand. You're better off using Goddess of the Third Eye than Buster Blader as you'll wind up with too many tribute monsters. This card is very strong for attacking, and, so long as you keep a large hand, has a very Imperial Order-like effect. This is one of the few fusions that might just be worth playing. 3) Dark Magician Girl This level five mage has 2000 attack points and is powered up 300 points for all Dark Magician and Magician of Black Chaos cards in either graveyard. This makes her a deadly weapon in any spellcaster deck. By using Card Destruction and Graceful Charity, she can be powered up to 2900 very quickly. 2) Skilled (Experienced) Dark Magician This card's name will probably become Dark Magician's Apprentice or something. Anyway, it's a level four with 1900/1700 stats, and when three magic cards have been played after it is summoned, you can tribute it to special summon a Dark Magician from your hand, deck or graveyard. This is amazingly powerful as a deck thinner, an attacker and even a magic prevention card. If you run spellcasters, run this guy. 1) Liberation This powerful magic card lets you discard all monsters in your hand but one, and reduce the remaining monster's summoning cost by 1. This means you need only pay one tribute for Dark Magician, and none for Dark Magician Girl. Not only that, but you can discard all your excess Dark Magician cards! This powerful combo needs a little setup, but is one of the most annoying moves you can make. Liberation single-handedly makes a lot of tribute monsters playable. Well, that's the top ten Dark Magician support cards. I hope you'll give your Mages a second look after these cards are released. Some current English cards that will also the Dark Magician are Yami, Mystic Plasma Zone, Monster Reborn/Premature Burial/Call of the Haunted/The Shallow Grave. Hope ya liked my first top ten list!
